WASHINGTON — At least part of the White House (search) was evacuated
Thursday after a false radar reading mistakenly indicated that a plane
flew within five miles of restricted airspace around the complex,
officials said.

"It's a false radar target," said William Shumann, Federal Aviation
Administration (search) spokesman. "When the NORAD fighters got to the
location of the alleged violation, they found nothing."

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (search), or NORAD, is the
command center for the defense of U.S. and Canadian airspacursday morning.

An aide to President Bush said that staffers were told to go to a nearby
street but were allowed to go back to their desks a short time later.

The president was traveling in Britain at the time. Many of his top
aides also were on the trip and not in the building.

"The threat level was never raised," Mitchell said.

On Nov. 10, Air Force fighter jets scrambled to intercept a private
plane that flew too close to the White House. The plane was later
determined not to be a threat.

The president was away then, also, on a trip to Arkansas and South Carolina.

Latest reports are that it was a false radar return. No airplane, but
perhaps a flock of birds or something.

Now our fearless leaders are running from shadows and ghosts. Not that a
real airplane was much threat to them.

Of course. The old "aircraft equipped with a cloaking device" story.

Yeah, probably another case of the mysterious November Golf Hotel Oscar
Sierra Tango.

How much longer do you all think it's going to be before somebody actually
gets shot down?

You mean like the evangelists in Peru?

I believe, that if the intruder aircraft is able to communicate with
the intercepting aircraft on 121.5, and its pilot complies with
instructions, the likelihood is not too great that an innocent
'intruder' will be downed. It is to the advantage of the errant
intruding flight, that it be detected and challenged as near as
possible to the time it enterers the TFR. It would be my guess, that
the shoot-down trigger is expressed as a distance from a specific
point; any unidentified aircraft within that distance is probably
deemed a threat and therefore a target. But, I'm just gussin'.
