Default Special Airworthiness Certifcates for Tow planes (US)

Hi,
Does anyone have any information or experience concerning the purchase
of a tow plane (Pawnee) that has a Special Airworthyness Certificate?
Is there anything that has to be done or be made aware of prior to
purchase?

Thanks for any advice.

Bob

Bob, it depends.
Most Pawnee's have a "Restricted" airworthiness certificate for
"agricultural" or something to that effect.

What you need for glider tow, is a "restricted" certificate for "glider or
banner tow".
Ours had been used by the previous owners towing under the "agriculture"
certificate.
Our previous A&P was able to take the log books into the FSDO, show where
the spray equipment had been removed, show the #337 for the tow hook
installation, the new W&B, and they issued the new "Restricted - glider and
banner tow".
Our current A&P is looking into changing it to a "Standard" certificate. We
were told it is possible.

There have been some recent threads in the last year on this same subject
from other clubs. Try a Google search them and then try to contact those
clubs.

I might also try to contact Williams Soaring in CA, they are working on a
couple of Pawnees there.
