Default Web site for new IGC Position Recorder category

Dear friends,

I am pleased to announce that there is a new web site dealing with
the
new IGC Position Recorder category that was introduced by the latest
version of the Sporting Code that came into effect on 1 October 2009.

This new GPS recorder category is for evidence for Silver and Gold
badge
flights. It was introduced after extensive discussion within IGC,
mainly because the 1 October code deletes all reference to cameras
and
photographic evidence and it was felt that another device for flight
evidence was appropriate.

A type of GPS recorder simpler than the existing IGC-approved GNSS
Flight Recorder (FR) was therefore chosen. Since the lowest IGC-
approval level for FRs is badge flights up to Diamonds (see Annex B
to
the Sporting Code para 1.1.3.3 for approval levels), it was logical
that
the new Position Recorder should be able to be used for Silver and
Gold
(in addition to using an IGC-approved FR, if available).

The new Position Recorder web site includes:

1. Extracts from the Sporting Code and its Annexes where Position
Recorders are mentioned.

2. The first approval documents for Position Recorders. There is
one
from the Gliding Federation of Australia on OzFlarm and MiniOz, and
one
from the Fédération Française de Vol à Voile on Swiss Flarm and other
variants that use it under licence. Other approval documents will be
posted here when they are published.

3. A more general specimen approval document that is recommended for
use by other National gliding authorities if they wish to approve
specific devices under the new IGC Position Recorder rules.

The new web site can be accessed in the normal way through the usual
site for GPS recorders:

www.fai.org/gliding/gnss

After a few introductory remarks there are links to:

1. IGC-Approved Flight Recorders
direct reference: www.fai.org/gliding/IGC_approved_frs

and

2. Position Recorders
Direct reference: www.fai.org/gliding/position_recorders

Comments are welcome, and, as it says on the Position Recorder web
site,
should be sent to the Chairmen of the IGC ANDS, GFA and Sporting Code
committees, more details on the PR web site.

Regards to all, just recovering from de-rigging a Nimbus earlier
today
....
