There is plenty of information on RAS on the steps to take for importing the glider inside the trailer, but this always assume that the trailer is something similar to a Cobra that is already approved for use within the United States. What about a trailer that was built as a one off in the UK? As far as I can tell this is considered a non-conforming vehicle by the DOT and the only solution is to use a registered importer and provide a steep bond to cover any potential modifications. BUT perhaps someone else who's done this can suggest an easier (and less expensive way)? Chris Try Importing the trailer as storage container. Find out what the rules are. When I was picking my glider from the port of entry I saw a few vehicles being imported from Russia. I asked one of the customs officers how they intended clear customs. He said they are intended for working in the forest or a farm. He also said there would be a flat bed coming for each of them. Try this approach it must be possible. Then when you go to register you tell them it is a home built. Then you should be all set. Maybe! In Washington state, the state patrol does this, but you have to show them receipts for all the materials that were used to build the trailer if you claim it was homebuilt. I went through this about 20 years ago, when I bought a homebuilt trailer in Oregon, because Oregon did not (at least then) require a license for glider trailers. -- Eric Greenwell - Washington State, USA * Change "netto" to "net" to email me directly * "Transponders in Sailplanes" http://tinyurl.com/y739x4 * Sections on Mode S, TPAS, ADS-B, Flarm, more * "A Guide to Self-launching Sailplane Operation" at www.motorglider.org |

It turns out that this trailer is destined for Washington state! The
trailer is rather new and in good condition, so it would be hard to argue that it meets the 25 year exemption. As for the Russian's, there is an exemption ifor vehicles never be used on a road. And while I would like to think I'll never land out, never say never! Chris |
