Are these prototypes? The markings from the 20th Fighter Wing on the tail
and Marines underneath are odd if they're not.

Sorry. No idea. I'm guessing that yes they are prototypes.

Prototypes would not have any such markings. See attached picture.

Well, I got a bunch of airplane wallpaper online in one zipped folder and
that image was in there. Maple 1 is right though. It is a computer generated
image not an actual photo. For that matter after having a closer look, it
might just be a very good illustration/composited image using Photoshop.

Take care,

Nick

I was going in the same direction as Maple 1, but I wanted to know
where you got it. When I first saw the picture the tail jumped right
out at me as being odd. Did a little research online and found that
the 20th Fighter Wing (Shaw Air Force Base) is supposed to get the
F-35, but the A variant is not supposed to replace the F-16 until
2013; and the A-10 in 2028. The B variant won't replace the AV-8B
Harrier II until 2012. The carrier variant, to replace the F-18, won't
be available until 2014; even though the first production F-35C rolled
out on July 29th of this year. Sorry for rambling on like that, I've
had a little free time lately.

It is a good fake.
