Collins Radio

Saw a Warrior with a Collins radio in it. Never saw this radio before.
Are they very old?

Well. Yes. They could be pretty old. They also could be pretty new - or
reconditioned. Either way, they do look old. Kind of an old style, crank the
knobs kind of a "user interface."

Electronically, they are pretty good radios. As with any radio, it is not
necessarily the age of the radio but how it performs. Whether Collins, King,
or Narco, there are some pretty old radios out there that are still
performing like a champ.

Collins is a very respected name in radio going back to the 1930's. I
wasn't aware that they ever made anything for the GA market, but if
you've got a Collins in your panel, I guess they must have.

Today, their line is all high-end stuff for jets and aerospace (maybe
broadcast transmitters too?). I suspect anything you could buy from
Collins today would have a price tag higher than the value of your
entire airplane.

It doesn't get any better than Collins. I would take a 25 year old Collins
over a brand new NARCO in a heartbeat. They have been around forever are
top of the line in corporate and commercial jets.

over a brand new NARCO in a heartbeat. They have been around forever are

I have had a Collins Micro-Line in my plane since 1978. Between the nav
and comm, I think that it has seen the shop three or four times.

Collins started the MicroLine about 1977 or 78 -- they are good radios,
but with only one flip/flop storage channel.

Can't speak to the age. The ones in my 172 were moved out of a 310. The previous owner thought enough of them in the 310 to pay to
have them moved into the Skyhawk 4 years ago.

I like them fine. They are a little heavy and my sidetone is too high. Makes it hard to balance with the intercom but that is not
the radios fault. I am just too lazy to take it in for such a piddley thing.

Have a Collins Nav/Com in my Skylane along with a King 155. Although
it doesn't have the "flip-flop" freg, the Collins radio works fine but
I really like a NAV feature not found on the King. You can switch it
to show a digital read-out of the "TO" or "FROM" radial. Very
convenient tracking complement to the OBS.
