Oudie and 302

Anyone using an Oudie with a CA302 ? Any comments on it? How do you
have it hooked up? Are you using the internal GPS or the 302 GPS?
Would you buy one now or wait?

Hi Stephen,

I'm biased since I sell both 302s and Oudies, but I think they make a great
combination. I flew with an Oudie connected to a 302A at a soaring contest
last year and was very happy with the pair. It would have been better to
have the Oudie connected to a 302 so it could receive vario, wind and
airspeed data from the 302. I used the Oudie and ConnectMe software to
download flight logs from the 302A to a microSD memory card. The Oudie can
also send task declarations to the 302 or 302A. I have tested it - it works
great.

The Oudie is supplied with a power/data cable that has an RJ45 connector,
and an RJ45 to DB-9 connector. The RJ45 to DB-9 connector can be configured
to work with the 302. It is a simple and free solution. The Oudie's
power/data cable must be powered with 12V.

Another option is the Oudie-PS5a-1 cable. It can be powered with 5V from
the 302 and also pass 5V power to the Oudie. You can see details he

I highly recommend connecting the 302 to the Oudie so the 302 can send
vario, wind and airspeed data to the Oudie. If the connect to the 302
fails, or the 302 fails, the Oudie will automatically switch over to using
its internal GPS. That makes for a nice, redundant system.

I've sold over 340 Oudies so far. Obviously there must be many happy
customers that are telling their friends about the Oudie.

1) Does the Oudie create a separate .igc file even when using the 302
gps?

2) If the 302 gps fails and the Oudie switches to internal gps, will
the .igc file be intact?

Both the 302 and the Oudie log the flight in separate files. Only the 302
file is accepted for badges and records.

If the 302 fails the Oudie would still log the flight, but it couldn't be
used for badges or records.

Mio running XCSoar was accepted in a test.

Oudie log file most definitely will be accepted by the OLC. Be
careful to exit SeeYou Mobile before powering down the Oudie or it
will result in an invalid IGC file giving the dreaded red circle of
doom.

Oudie logging its own separate file saved my butt on Day 1 of the
Region 10 contest when the SD Card on the Nano somehow popped out
during flight. I also had my FlywithCE running during the flight as a
third backup but didn't have to resort to that.

12VDC = 302 = Oudie supplied cable (serial) = Oudie
12VDC = same Oudie supplied cable (12VDC to 5VDC converter) = Oudie

With the Oudie-PS5a-1 cable you would have this setup;

12VDC = 302 = Oudie-PS5a-1 (serial + 5VDC) = Oudie

So the Oudie-PS5a-1 solution is cleaner/neater. Is it electrically
better? Better 12VDC to 5VDC conversion? Better RS-232 signal
converter?

*** Good questions. The only advantage is the simple and clean setup. It
eliminates the need to connect the Oudie's power/data cable to 12V. The
Oudie-PS5a-1 cable has been quite popular. I guess many people prefer the
simple and clean approach.

One other point I'd like to offer concerning the PS-5a-1 Cable. The
early models of the cable apparently were prone to breakage in the
mini-USB plug (Oudie end of the cable). Mine broke internally after
more than a year and Paul Remde and Goddard Electronics provided
excellent support and an updated cable in a very short time. I highly
commend and recommend them for their great customer service. The
cable costs more than a little, but it does work extremely well and is
a no-brainer to set up. Connect it to the serial port on the 302,
plug the other end into the Oudie, set up the Oudie communication
menu, and you're off to the races!

Stephen,

The oudie works well with the CAI 302. The Oudie is powered with the
optional cable by the 302 . SeeYou is set up in the Hardware 302
screen and port is also set to COM 4 to use the CAI 302 GPS. This
will give you direct winds instead of the circling winds with the
internal GPS.
