According to my parts manual Cessna 173, 1973 Serial number 17260993
My landing light should be GE 4522. Is there a quartz replacement for this lamp? Is this lamp available from an automotive supplier? |

Is there a quartz replacement for this lamp? Is this lamp available from an automotive supplier? No and no. They are available as the 4522 from the catalog houses such as Spruce. They are so robust that owners typically never have to replace them during their ownership....because they are used so little compared to those faired into the leading edge (4509). When you re-install, pay attention to which side the shield of the filament is pointed. It is meant to protect the pilot from the bright light, but at least 30 percent are 180 degrees displaced and so shine the light at the pilot and the prop. Neal |

I did not realize that the alert about mounting would not be enough for
some....the housing for the swingdown Grimes light, which is the only one I know of that uses the 4522 is made to be used from either wing. Consequently, when installing the bulb, one must be sure the Grimes has been "coded" for the wing it is to be used on. The assembly comes with an alert on the back stating; change orientation to use on the right so that the shield is toward the pilot such that the light does not get in his eyes!!!! Neal |
