What do you look for beyond a normal preflight when you're about to
go on a long trip? For example, if you were flying from the west coast to Oshkosh you wouldn't want to be within 10 hours of an oil change or a 50/100-hour inspection. -- Ben Jackson http://www.ben.com/ |

As Jay says, inspection of the plane shouldn't change much, but if I'm
wandering far away I DO make sure I have my tool box in the back along with an extra quart or two of oil, windshield wipes, etc. Other inspections to worry about (mostly for legal reasons): alt/static/xpdr, elt, etc. mark "Jay Honeck" wrote in message news:QIa5c.13883$Cb.320272@attbi_s51... True, but if, for example, you're getting close to an oil change, you might prefer to take the trip on clean oil. --- Jay -- __!__ Jay and Teresa Masino ___(_)___ http://www2.ari.net/jmasino ! ! ! http://www.oceancityairport.com http://www.oc-adolfos.com |

![]() Ben Jackson wrote: What do you look for beyond a normal preflight when you're about to go on a long trip? Well, I wouldn't head across country if the annual was due and I thought it likely that I'd get stranded several hundred miles away, but that's about it. There's nothing critical about having to change the oil at 60 hours instead of doing it at 50. I got stranded once at my home field when a tailwheel tire blew. The maintenance shop didn't stock them. Now I just keep a spare tube in the plane. You may want to make special note of frequencies -- atc, tower, just in case you miss a call and don't want to take the time to look them up or call flight service. If it's out of the country, suitable documents for crossing national boundaries. I like to take travel guides, too, in case there's tiome to visit something I might have otherwise forgotten about. If it's a long legged trip with some passengers who aren't used to being without a rest room, some one gallon zip lock bags do well for (male) urine. And oh yeah, a credit card or two!! Btw, those wash and dry packets are pretty handy too, for getting rid of av gas smell on your hands when you check the tanks anytime. |

If I am going on a long trip, I usually have my mechanics look over the
plane, change the oil (if its been more then 25 hours) and regap the plugs. if I recently had these things done, then I dont do anything different since I always plan on landing every 4.5 - 5 hours for fuel.
