Apparently, the www.cloudstreet.org website got hammered with viewing requests following the original post about the soon to be released "Cloudstreet: Soaring the American West" trailer. Sorry about that.
The following link should provide better access to the four minute trailer. http://vimeo.com/88283001 Many thanks for the encouraging comments received by us so far. We hope you will be as excited when the final one-hour video is released on PBS this year. DVD distribution is still under negotiation, but rest assured that it will be available through some method. |

Fantastic video, looks great on my TV at home. Thanks for sharing! Luke Szczepaniak |

Excellent video. I particularly like the side shot sequence (at
2:16) of the Stemme in which the wing mounted camera moves up and down in the turbulence. That gives a more realistic than usual depiction of the gliding experience. Was this by design? John Galloway |

Does anyone know what camera was used. The quality is is perfect. |

Most of the glider-to-glider footage was done using a Sony CX-760 HD camera.. It is small, has excellent color rendition and most importantly, has gyro stabilization which greatly enhanced the video quality by eliminating much of the jumpiness associated with many other cameras. Note that this is true gyro stabilization- not software driven. You can actually see the lens move inside the camera body as your coffee and adrenaline induced shakes are damped out. Not to mention the bouncy effect of turbulence.
Moriarty Airport (0E0) in New Mexico is the field where we (Mike Abernathy, Billy Hill and myself) are based. It is home to the Albuquerque Soaring Club, although the ASC had no direct involvement in the production. Billy and I are members, Mike is not. Other sites in the video are the Grand Tetons (flying from Driggs, ID), Salida, CO and Telluride, CO |

John-
The turbulence sequence probably wasn't planned- after all, how often do we fly into rough air on purpose? It's amazing how much neat video was discovered while reviewing the footage.. Often we found things we really had no idea were happening while flying. Lots of that had to do with not having actual camera feed in the cockpit much of the time. It was only on the flights later in the game that we had an actual monitor and someone who could watch it while the pilot did the flying. |

To word my question better; the camera mount in that short sequence appears to have damped flex in it and I wondered whether that was by accident or design? Either way it enhances the realism. John-
The "damping" is probably a result of the Sony CX760's built in gyro stabilization lagging slightly behind the wing flexing. In the past, using non-stabilized cameras, the wing flex in turbulence resulted in a much shakier and jerkier motion that did not look all that good on video. The gyro stabilization of the CX760 translated into a smoother action, while still showing wing flex. |
