After two previous cancellations due to xwind, I took my friend for a night
flight over Reno last night. Thunderstorms from earlier moved over the sierra. Wind was extremetly calm, no bumps. Good moon, but lots of cloud cover. Beautiful flight into Reno from Minden and finished it off with a perfect landing. Asked Clearance if we could do some sightseeing around downtown before departing for Minden. The casinos are pretty cool at night, all lit up. As a bonus (unforntunate, but still pretty cool to see) there was a big wildfire west of Reno in Verdi. That was pretty cool to see from the air at night. After circling the casinos a couple of times, we headed back to Minden. Did a couple full stop landings (to stay current) and called it a night. All in all, I REALLY enjoy night flying. It is really relaxing for some reason. Adam |

One of these days I will get up there...I just dont like the idea of not really being able to see the ground ;-) -- Jonathan, www.virtual-hangar.com |

I once flew from Lake Tahoe to Reno at night . . . one of the most memorable
flights of my life. I saw the rotating green and white beacon from 20 south of the field (or so I thought) but it turned out to be a military field just north of Reno--when I realized my error, I was almost directly over Canon. The tower cleared me for 25, and I landed uneventfully. The return flight was just incredible . . . I clicked on the Lake Tahoe runway lights from out over the lake and it lit up with strobes and the brightest runway lights I had ever seen. Landed, taxied to FBO, tied plane down and dropped keys and book in a box outside the office. It was only 8:30 PM but there wasn't a breathing soul at the airport. It was completely deserted. www.Rosspilot.com |
