Hey
Can any one in here tale me, or rather explain to me how to hover ?? I have tried it in a R22, but it tilt / turned, every time. First I hold only the height, then height and pedals and that was OK, but when I should hold the stick, the helicopter flip. I have asked around, and the nearest I have come To an explanation was that it is a "feeling" you get after 15 - 20 hours?? I am a holder of a PPL fixwing, I hope to fly heli. Some day How do you do it ????? : ) Anker B. Denmark. |

There is NO way anyone is going to be able to explain how to hover in a
message on the Internet. What is your instructor telling you? "ABE" hvad@saa wrote in message k... Hey Can any one in here tale me, or rather explain to me how to hover ?? I was also told about that "feeling". It came alltogether somewhere around
10 hours. At the begining of my training I was very stif and imputs were to strong and unarticulated. It looked like a rodeo. Good luck! H.J. Croatia "ABE" hvad@saa wrote in message k... Are you trying to learn to hover by yourself? A CFI can help you to learn the trick. After that you fly like a dragonfly. |

Hovering's easy. First, you have to understand how the helicopter flies,
what the controls do in that process, what the helicopter you're flying is doing at that instant, how to redirect the process with minimal control changes-and be able to make the control adjustments while you evaluate your situation and the changes just introduced. It's complex mentally and physically until- it isn't- anymore. Practice, practice, and more practice. You'll get through it. Wally |

Hey
You don't just hover, you interpret the dynamics of what is occurring and once you have done that you then interpret the dynamics of what will occur and correct for it. You need an open mind for this so forget most of your fixed wing nature and develop new ones for the helicopter. Read and understand the dynamics prior to and after each lesson. This will help you to see what is happening. You should be hovering in a small zone in 5 hours and within 10 hours you will be holding over an exact spot fairly easy. Don't concern yourself with just hovering, as your lesson progresses while learning airspeed control, power management, approaches etc. you will learn it. Sorry this doesn't explane it exactly but you just can't be told what to do and be able to do it (in this case). One thing to know is, if someone else does it, so can you (eventually). ![]() The best advice I had in learning to hover: 1. Look outside the aircraft at the horizon 2. When thinking of control inputs, think of fingertip pressure rather than movements. 3. To quote my first instructor, "Stop stirring the damn cyclic!" |

![]() Most ppl make way too many power changes and way too quickly. Usually they're behind the machine when they do this too. Since the power changes require the pilot also make anti-torque and cyclic adjustments they quickly get into some kind of over-corrective oscillation. One little trick I learned that seems to help people understand hovering is to show them that if you set and hold the collective at any given power setting at a hover and point it into the wind, the helicopter will just stay at the assigned height +/- a couple feet without any changes to the collective setting. I think that it would be much harder if you get all the controls at one
time. Just the cyclic took me 2hrs. to get the thing to behave. The pedals didn't add much to the problem or even the collective/ throttle. Just the dang cyclic. I've since built a little cyclic simulator involving a disc and a steel ball which helps people understand that they have to anticipate the movement of the ship and make small corrections. A flight school bought one of the little simulators for use in their school. I once gave a neighbor a ride and he tried to hover and of course the thing took off for an out-of-state zip code and I grabbed it and put it back and he got on with me and he said: " You are making corrections and I can't tell why you are doing it" I told him that my butt was telling my hand what needed to be done. The only way that I know to train the butt is to get actual seat time in a hovering helicopter. Stu Fields "ABE" hvad@saa wrote in message k...
