If a Blackhawk has a tail rotor failure how fast does it have to be going at
max weight to trail in the wind and at what speed do they do a running landing? |

UH60 must touch down below 60 knots ground speed. So, I would be looking at a optimal speed of 60kts with a TR failure. Clive |

That's Black Hawk, not Blackhawk. The Blackhawk was the S-67 gunship.
The Black Hawk is the S-70/UH-60. The tail of the Blach Hawk was designed originally to allow the helicopter to be flown home without a tail rotor. However, the large fin created too much tail rotor blockage and had to be trimmed back, resulting in the "missing tooth" tail we see today. I don't think that the Black Hawk has the capability to fly home after loosing the tail rotor. To quote USAAVRADCOM-TR-82-D-26 "Directional Control Developmental Experiences Associated with the UH-60A Utility Helicopter" on page 66; "It was eventually accepted that no fly home capability existed." |
