There were a bunch of start penalties yesterday. Wonder what the deal was? Some of the penalties were pilot malfunction....top of lift was way above max start height and a couple guys did not get back in the cylinder for the required 2 minutes Jim Price, Contest Manager |

This morning we expect clearing and sun but very strong wind out of the WNW....We're keeping our fingers crossed for DAY 2 Jim Price, CM |

Max start height is so frustrating. I prefer to set it at 10,000 agl and leave it there for the whole contest.

Nawww...that would be too simple. Gotta overload contest pilots with rules so they're sure to keep their heads down in the cockpit while circling at 110kts.

I consider the current start height rule much better than the "screaming from up high to do the Limbo entering the course" we had some time ago.
Better was when a good pilot went on course (with that old rule), gliders appeared from all over (some from up the side of clouds) screaming along so they could follow. I KNOW there were trips well past VNE so pilots could get low enough and then they would zoom back up after hearing, "good start so and so"! |

We had a much stronger day than forecast ....our CD, who is the best, set the max start height to try to keep us out of the fog up there circling in the clouds ...the top of lift was much higher than forecast. Unfortunately a couple of guys never came back down into the cylinder.....one of them told me "I wouldn't feel so bad except I know the rules" Jim |
