Bit of a long shot but as part of my retirement masterplan I've agreed to Purchase an ASW-20 in Ohio. If anyone is headed West from that area with an empty hitch I am willing to pay expenses to help move my new purchase. The glider needs to end up in Ephrata, WA.
Thanks, Charlie |

If you don't find anybody here, try UShip.
You might want to put on new tires and repack the bearings. |

I moved a glider in a Cobra trailer from Chicago to Harris Hill.Â* I
charged $1,800 (IIRC) for the trip.Â* Towing a trailer reduces the efficiency of the tow vehicle.Â* I was on a road trip anyway and the deviations off course to pick up and deliver the glider were not that excessive. I shipped a Cobra from California to Georgia for $2000 bucks with Uship.com.. You post your request and drivers bid on your job. We got 2 drivers that had delivered a job out west and were looking for anything headed back east.. Bargain deal.........ship was delivered in good condition in about a week..

I've used Uship twice with success.
Things to consider: 1. Don't book the first "broker" that contacts you. There will be lots. They are a middle man and don't actually ship anything. they'll find you a driver but not always the fastest or cheapest. Further, you will be locked into contract with them if another driver contacts you. In my opinion, just work directly with drivers. 2. Bid high if you are in a rush (an extra $100 will increase your rate of securing a bid quickly) 3. Last minute booking is sorta the norm. I was flying the glider in Colorado, landed to load up with an appointment to meet the shipper to pickup. He called and said truck is broke down and will not be able to make it. I freaked out because I had a flight out the next afternoon. I posted a new listing on uship requesting pickup in 24 hrs and added $200 to the job. I had the job booked in 2 hrs and glider picked up the following morning. He was a very professional and prompt shipper. No problems. We are lucky to have this great service. Expect $2,000-$2,500 for cross trailering of your glider. Not too bad! |

That’s probably the route I’ll go. How do they load/unload? Do you bring it to a truck dock?

Pickups, vans, etc. If your trailer has a 50 mm hitch, you should consider providing the ball. Don't skimp and say, "meh, 1 7/8ths is close enough." Steve Leonard |

Charles,
They will trailer it behind their truck more than likely. Providing the ball is a good idea. You can arrange a flatbed but it will likely cost more. Both mine were just trailed as normal. Don't forget to consider putting new tires on prior to the trip. They will fail on a cross-USA drive if they've been sitting more than a season or two. They will literally drop the trailer off in front of your house. It's very convenient. |
