Boy they kept this quiet. I'm sure they will have them at Airventure. Since
I can't go those of you that do let's here about it. http://www.sportys.com/acb/showdetl....gId=52 9#desc Garmin GPSMAP 396 All the great features of the 296, PLUS XM datalink weather! The new Garmin GPSMAP 396 is a truly portable Multi-Function Display. It combines a sharp color moving map, Garmin's popular terrain alerting and satellite datalink weather. An integrated GXM 30 smart antenna makes the satellite connection, enabling the unit to receive and process XM Weather and flight safety products. In addition to offering the outstanding features and operation of the GPSMAP 296, the GPSMAP 396 allows pilots to display NEXRAD radar, Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs), METARs, TAFs, Winds Aloft and many other useful weather products through a subscription with XM Radio data services. Speaking of XM Radio, the audio and entertainment from XM Satellite Radio is also available via an audio jack on the unit. An additional subscription is required for XM Radio entertainment. What more could you ask from a GPS portable? How about displaying TIS traffic when interfaced with a Garmin GTX330 transponder, and channeling a Garmin SL30 Nav/Com by highlighting a frequency on the GPSMAP 396 and pressing the enter button. The GPSMAP 396 also performs in the car or on the boat as well, with turn by turn directions. |

No that will be the 596. My bet the 496 will have Dynon style EFIS. |

Gig,
No that will be the 596. That model will fly - with the user attached. -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

I tell you - that 396 looks sweet! A bit pricey but it has everything.
Just recently bought an Airmap 2000C which works great but!! I understand Lowrance is working on releasing an add-on to the 2000C that will include terrain and weather. Hopefully by Spring 2006... ![]() "Thomas Borchert" wrote in message ... Gig, No that will be the 596. That model will fly - with the user attached. -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

I agree -- it's got some awesome features -- if they could just do something about that dinky little screen, I'd buy one in a heartbeat... Until then, I suspect I'll stick with my AvMap. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

One shot updates to database is ~$80? Lowrance looks like $35. What justifies the difference? What makes the AvMap trump the AirMap 2000C? |

AvMap tracks 12 sattelites, and is WAAS capable.
What trumps the Airmap (and all others)? Size, plain and simple. The AvMap is still the biggest color screen on the market. When I'm on a cross-country flight, I can display the whole route of flight and maintain a fair amount of detail, thanks to that gigantic color screen. And when I zoom down to airport level, the runways can be displayed big enough to read the numbers on 'em! The screens are easily modified to contain all sorts of info. Right now we are displaying Sunrise/Sunset information in addition to GPS altitude, all the pertinent radio frequencies, ground speed, and all the other usual stuff. I'm looking forward to playing with the 396 at OSH, and I may change my mind -- but I suspect if it's still using the same screen as the 296, all that cool information will be less-than-adequately displayed. In the case of GPS screens, size really matters, IMHO. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |
