GLIDING IN IRELAND

I will be traveling to Ireland from March 29 - April
10 2006 and would like to fly there. Has anyone flown
gliders in Ireland and where? What were conditions
like?

The Dublin GC is a very friendly and helpful bunch of people. They have
(or had in 1990) an airfield near the capital at a place called Naas.

But I didn't fly with them there. They run an expedition to the Dingle
Peninsular in the SW of Ireland every Autumn, where they launch their
gliders by car tow, in the hope of catching the wave set up by the local
mountain range, Magillcuddlies Reeks In 1990 I and a friend took a
Skylark 4 there, but no wave. No rain either, but a very good trip.

Hi, Gordon

The other gliding club in Ireland is the Ulster Gliding Club in
Northern Ireland. We fly from Bellarena, near Limavady
(Londonderry/Derry nearest city, or stay in Portstewart where I live
and visit the Giant's Causeway while you're here). There is usually
flying taking place on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We have wave
and ridge lift all the year round in wind directions from SE through
West to North (up to 25,000 feet from Donegal mountains, Sperrin
mountains). Thermals start in March and we get sea breeze fronts in
summer. There is nearly always some lift around, so hour-long flights
in the single seaters are usual. We launch by aerotow and have three
club two seaters (DG 505, K13 x 2) and two club single seaters (K6cr,
Astir CS).

Visiting pilots always welcome!
