Clarification on who can instruct for Sport

A current CFI may train sport pilot candidates, within the category/class
listed on the CFI's certificate.

As you've been told, current CFIs can instruct. There is also the
provision for existing (but not licensed) ultra light instructors to
obtain a CFI-SP with slightly less hassle (although the CFI checkride
is still required).
