I uploaded the pictures of my installation of Wedekind safety
sleeves. These go on L'Hotelier fittings and are much easier to use than any other method. http://geocities.com/jhderosa Enjoy, John DeRosa |

I have always considered safety pins to be a good solution. Nothing here to make me change my mind. A few cents worth of piano wire, 15 minutes or less making a set of pins, and 30 seconds to install them at each assembly. Why do you claim the sleeves are better? Andy |

The Wederkind sleeves are simply easier to use, but not necessarily
any more/less safe. At least on the DG's air brakes, the pins are a bear to insert. While the aileron connects are right in the middle and very vissible, the brakes are deep inside and you have to insert the pins by feel. Not fun. I had the pins. Then I went to the Uerling sleeves (which need to be replaced every few years). The Wederkind sleeves are definately the best of the three for ease of use. - John DeRosa |

In my opinion Wedekind sleeves are more prone to mounting errors due
to their ease of use. After connecting the L'Hoteliers and snapping back the Wedekind sleeves it is important to carefully check whether the sleeve aktually covers the securing plate and then pull at the fitting in opening direction. This is the only way to ensure a safe connection! Last year we had a serious accident at our club after the L'Hotelier of the left aileron had disconnected. Ironically it was the Wedekind sleeve of the disconnected aileron which caused it to jam, therefore also blocking the connected aileron. Generally L'Hoteliers are far from full proof an require carefull handling. Wedekind sleeves are surely the easiest to use. I think the LS-Sleeves which are screwed all the way over the connection are probably the safest because they do no only stop the securing plate from opening but secure the whole connection. |
