C172N Eats Landing lights for breakfast

My friend owns a 77 172N. Eats Landing lights. A real pain to change
with the cowling.

I recently read in an old copy of Aviation Consumer Buyers guide that
some of the N models are known to do this and that there's a Landing
Light Improvement Kit from Cessna.

I could not find one online

Does anyone know of the kit? Or another solution.

As a newbie - dont know. But I know someone must know the info for a
172! Thx

I don't know if this is the kit you are referring to, I believe there is
one available that moves the landing light to the wing.
The vibration of the cowling breaks the hot filament/kills the landing
lights.

thx! I also got an offline email about a halogen replacement with a
longer life, and one they think is more resistant to vibration.

Of course, the big improvement would be filament-less lamps;
aka gas-discharge. Someone here will know the name.....

I think you're talking about HID (High Intensity Discharge). That's what
in the annoying blue-ish headlights that have been showing up on cars the
past bunch of years.

We did an HID upgrade on one of our 172s. It's nice; no need to worry
about bulb life, so it's basically always on in flight.

But this was wing-mounted (a P model, I think). We've also an N (and some
other planes with cowl-mounted lights), and - when I last looked - the HID
wasn't STCed for cowl-mounting.

On the other hand, it was anticipated, so perhaps it has occurred by now.
