This is something I've never learned how to do. Apparently the
procedure is to look up the CTAF and then click the ptt button? Is
there a standard procedure for how many times?

3 clicks will give you low intensity, 5 clicks medium, and 7 clicks high
intensity.

However, some airports only use a subset of these settings. In the US, the
A/FD will typically spell out the non-standard pilot activated lighting
sequences needed to get the lights on.

Oh, and be awa Some airports provide pilot controlled lighting on a
different frequency than CTAF. Again, the A/FD will include this info.

The AIM also says to start with the 7 clicks to activate the system, then
you can reduce the intensity with 3 or 5 additional clicks. Every airport I
have ever been to does not need this though. Just 3 or 5 clicks is enough
right off the bat.

Depends on the setup. ARCAL Type K is supposed to take 7
clicks to turn on initially, but many will come on at the three-click
low intensity setting. Ours does that, and I have to take some time to
figure out how to get the 7-click to work so that the lights aren't
coming on all the time when there's a lot of short comms between
aircraft. It used to work properly but the electronics have aged and
gotten a little less patient. Like me.

AND...

If it's already on when as you aquire the airport...don't assume it
will stay on for your entire pattern!

Be sure to re-activiate it yourself or you might get a suprise on
short final.

(Ask me how I know...)

There's something about airport lighting coming on that is just
_COOL_... like a starship powering up or something...

I dunno, call me a little kid, but I _LOVE_ Pilot controlled
lighting... Impresses the hell out of passengers too

The other night I was coming into San Carlos after midnight... Got a
Midfield Transition over SFO, and then was told to proceed straight on
course to San Carlos (light traffic I suppose) which put me in the
rather unusual position of having a long straight in for 12.

I lined up for final using the highway which runs by the airport, the
Vasi and the Beacon, but I left the lighting off until 1/2 mile
final. Finally, as we passed over the diamond shaped water way, I hit
it, and the entire airport just materialized in front of us like a
science fiction ship de-cloaking... Shocked the hell out of my
passengers, who thought it was the coolest thing they'd ever seen.

You want to see impressive, find an airport with the full up precision
approach lighting and if things are quiet, ask the tower for an option
and a demonstration of the lights.
