Speculating about a name, before an official statement has been given and
relatives have been notified, is *very* bad manner.

That is too bad. Our best wishes to the survivors of this poor fellow.

One possible favorable element that may come from this tragedy is the
possibility the electronics on board these ships may be able to translate
what precisely went wrong.
Could be a rare opportunity for learning.

Or simply a last look at a friend.

Man, what a shame.

It is official now. Announcement in German on the DAeC website (the
national German gliding association):

http://www.daec.de/aktuell/index.php

or

http://www.daec.de/aktuell/2007/12/T...bert-Weiss.php

The local news of his hometown also carries it:

http://www.stimme.de/nachrichten/hoh...rt1919,1148870

A very sad day, my condolences to family and friends.

According to the german website
http://www.stimme.de/nachrichten/hoh...rt1919,1148870

he was actually Herbert Weiss.

Sad.
