ciao Fabio Four R.XIVa giant bombers, serial numbers R.69 -R.72, were ordered by Idflieg late in the War. These four machines were modified R.XIV designs, with the intent to improve the rate of climb, service ceiling and bomb load. This was to be accomplished through weight reduction and improved detail design and geared engines. Not all of this was accomplished on R.69, R.70 was to be completely lightened. The R.69 was completed in October 1918, the R.70 and R.71 were completed in 1919. It is not known if the R.72 was ever completed. The R.XIVa machines were built by the Flugzeugwerft G.m.b.H. at Staaken west of Berlin. Ref. "The German Giants" by G.W. Haddow and Peter M. Grosz. |
