Default For USA: Data Plate Exemption?

Can someone tell me the status of the old Data Plate Exemption for
gliders? There used to be a page on the SSA web page with the
exemption, but I can't find it now.

Is the Data Plate Exemption exempt? Do I now need a data plate?

Or, has the exemption been made permanent?

Thanks in advance for the help!

AFAIK, the letter is still required, but the links under the Govt
Liaison 2002 archive don't lead anywhere.

I've sent you PDF copies via e-mail.

Ray,

I just searched the SSA website and found the following:
http://www.ssa.org/NewsArchive.asp?S...te&archive=All

However, the links to the required documents are broken. It apears they
haven't been moved to the new server. Hopefully they will appear in the
near future.

The exemption has to be renewed every two years, and
always seems to be reluctantly extended by the FAA.
When the only glass aircraft around were sailplanes,
we got the exemption [I believe for performance reasons,
possibly for appearance - anyone know the real history
?].

For the last few years I have wandered around Oshkosh
and looked at other glass aircraft, experimentals and
LSAs. Some have an external metal dataplate, others
do not. Maybe the requirement has fallen into abeyance,
or maybe individuals have asked for and received similar
exemptions. Perhaps it is time for the industry, rather
than only the SSA, to ask for a permanent general waiver
for all glass aircraft. Internal metal dataplates
appear to serve the same purpose.

You should be able to access the FAA exemption database at http://aes.faa.gov/

Search for exemption number 4988, or for Soaring Society of America
under petitioner.

Or just search for "soaring" and see a list of everyone's soaring-
related exemptions.

The current extension expires October 2008.

Go to the SSA site, login,
HomeNews& InformationSearch the Archives look for "Exemptions" and
scroll down till you find it. The original exemption is there and
also the current renewal.
