Default EW loggers and Linux + WINE

Has anybody tried succeeded in getting the EW Uploader to run on Linux
under WINE and successfully talk to an EW Model D?

I'm using WINE 1.1.9 under Fedora 9. The uploader seems to run OK and can
see the logger when I boot it, but for some reason its not managing to
login to the model D. The Port list window shows the uploader trying to
connect to the logger for 2 seconds or so. Then the port state goes back
to "Awaiting connection" and the logger starts flashing.

This by the way is complete guesswork but
may with a bit of luck be worth considering.

The first thing that springs to mind is the
configuration of the serial port.

A google of [wine serial port] produces a few hits
that suggest that it is not all automagic (which is
perfectly reasonable).

Linux will need to release the port to wine and
windows will need to understand what ports are
available and what to refer to them by - com1, com7?

Problem solved. I now have the latest version of the EW Uploader running
successfully on Linux under WINE 1.1.9.

I thought I could simply FTP my (oldish) copy of the uploader across to
Linux: the result semi-worked as described above. Then I found that there
is a 2003/4 Uploader release on the EW website that fixes some problems
with USB-Serial converters. I downloaded that and installed it by running
its installer under WINE. That 'just worked'.

This uploader version now talks to my model D through one of the built-in
serial ports on my motherboard. However, it still won't deal with the USB-
serial converter. That could be down to a number of reasons, ranging from
it simply not liking my converter through incompatibilities with the
Linux USB management system. Maybe WINE needs the Windows USB drivers to
be installed. Who knows.

I'm ignoring the USB problem because I have another solution. Both my
serial ports have permanent uses and I could do with a few more anyway,
so rather than waste time fooling with USB, I'll simply drop in a six
port PCI card and use that for the uploader.
