Hi,

I'm trying to reconstruct some Delaware State records for Stan
Smith ... I'm researching through a couple of sources and thought I
could put a query out here as well.

Stan was flying a Mini Nimbus and apparently did a 186 mile flight
that was good for a DE state record ... and I'm thinking it might have
been a badge leg too. Anybody remember helping Stan on this
flight ... could have been a while ago ... maybe 1977 ??? maybe
earlier. i.e. The SSA Achievement badge section has a partial record
for a Stanley W. Smith dated 1977 ... but no location ... I'm
wondering if this was the flight. Any specific or anecdotal info would
be appreciated.

Happy Holidays ...

Hello Ken,

You have probably already contacted his son.
Peter Smith is the Director of our National Soaring Museum on Harris
Hill / Elmira, NY.

The NSM website is www.soaringmuseum.org

We are very fortunate to have Peter Smith as Director of the NSM -- he
brings management skills blended with a personal understanding of the
history of American soaring via his experiences with his father, Stan
Smith.

Ken, I believe the DE record flight you're referring to is one made on
June 17, 1961 from Newark, DE to Newport News, VA for a state goal and
distance record. The 1977 badge flight was on March 1 at Marion, NC,
when he finally completed his gold and diamond altitude. He had earned
all other badges many years earlier - he held U.S. Silver "C" No. 4.

I have all of my father's log books, contest diaries, barograph
traces, etc., so if you have other questions about Stan Smith, I can
probably help. And if you have other soaring history questions, the
resources of the National Soaring Museum are available to you and all
soaring enthusiasts (especially NSM members).

Best regards and holiday greetings,

Peter Smith (2S)
