Lurk around here and rec.aviation.student. Visit the airports and look into
a couple of flight schools. Talk to local flight instructors and pilots.

in your own plane.

1. Get a good job. One that pays decently and doesn't take all your time.
2. Look up "Airports - flight training" in the yellow pages.
3. Visit every one of these training schools.
4. Pick the one that seemed to you to be the most honest and had the best planes.
5. Schedule an introductory flight lesson.
6. If happy, write them a check for "block time" and start training.

Make lots of money!

You first need a career capable of supporting "aviation".
Then you need to get other obligations (like raising kids, paying down
the mortage, saving for retirement) out of the way.

Then you can enjoy aviation.

Good advice, but this can be problematic in much of the country. I'd bet
90% of the U.S. doesn't have more than one choice of flight school within a
reasonable distance.

Of course, in Florida and California, you might have a dozen within an
hour's drive...

In that case, "every one" is 1.
