View Full Version : C172N Eats Landing lights for breakfast

April 13th 07, 10:21 PM
My friend owns a 77 172N. Eats Landing lights. A real pain to change
with the cowling.

I recently read in an old copy of Aviation Consumer Buyers guide that
some of the N models are known to do this and that there's a Landing
Light Improvement Kit from Cessna.

I could not find one online

Does anyone know of the kit? Or another solution.

As a newbie - dont know. But I know someone must know the info for a
172! Thx

I don't know if this is the kit you are referring to, I believe there is
one available that moves the landing light to the wing.
The vibration of the cowling breaks the hot filament/kills the landing
lights.

thx! I also got an offline email about a halogen replacement with a
longer life, and one they think is more resistant to vibration.
Appreciate the info.

Of course, the big improvement would be filament-less lamps;
aka gas-discharge. Someone here will know the name.....

Searching this group
http://groups.google.com/group/rec.aviation.owning/search?group=rec.aviation.owning&q=cessna+landing+light
shows several possible solutions, including a halogen lamp, a kit from
Cessna to improve the mounting of the existing lamp, aftermarket kits
to move the lamp to the wing, and aftermarket HID lamp kits.

Uses Xenon light blub - guaranteed 5 years / 5000 hours. Five times brighter
than standard lighting.

I think you're talking about HID (High Intensity Discharge). That's what
in the annoying blue-ish headlights that have been showing up on cars the
past bunch of years.

We did an HID upgrade on one of our 172s. It's nice; no need to worry
about bulb life, so it's basically always on in flight.

But this was wing-mounted (a P model, I think). We've also an N (and some
other planes with cowl-mounted lights), and - when I last looked - the HID
wasn't STCed for cowl-mounting.

On the other hand, it was anticipated, so perhaps it has occurred by now.

IIRC, a Halogen bulb is suspectible to the same problems that a filament
bulb is. A Xenon light system is not.

Best case is LCDs and Xenon.

Can I get a 53" landing light please? ;)

A Halogen IS a filament lamp. [GE Nela Park will tell you bulbs are
for tulips; they sell *lamps*...]

The halogen magic has to do with with gas in the envelope. See
the Wikipedia entry on same...

Which is why I prefer Xenon.

When refering to HID, what is the difference between Halogen and Xenon?

I had these on my Bo, and am waiting for an STC for the new bird.

One of my SCUBA instructors was very strict: they are cylinders; tanks are

P.S. It suddenly occurs to me: my best instructors have been

I cannot use "best" in this context? Implied is "...in each discipline."

In a feeble attempt to be humorously pedantic I asked, "Your better

Sure you can.

I own a fairly young Seneca and put on the wingtips with hid's.
From RMD aircraft lighting. First rate to deal with.

Sigh, okay I'l cite the link, whimper....
http://www.rmdaircraft.com/hid.html

Much better than the halogens that were in there and they can be aimed.
Nothing short of spectacular.
I have two halogens on the nose strut, but they make little noticible
difference weather they are on or off. In fact it barely shows if they
are on or off.

If you go hid, you should be very happy.
