Question for Reno Veterans by
Jay Honeck
Incredibly, it's looking like we might be able to make an attempt at flying
to Reno for the air races in September. We've got the grandma lined up,
we've got the staffing set up -- all we need now is the weather.
I've been looking at our fly-in options, and it's looking surprisingly
bleak. I...

US Customs Decals -- buy them in advance by
Ben Jackson
When I returned to the US from Canada on Sunday the inspector told me
he could no longer accept a form 339 and the $25 fee in person. He
said I should just buy one online. That probably explains why I had so
much trouble finding the PDF form before I left.

My aviation site... by
Brian Burger
I've been collecting links & fiddling with this for a while now, and
finally decided to put it up.
http://www.warbard.ca/avgas/index.html
Mostly just links right now, but I'm going to be scanning some of my
aviation pics, adding some articles, and finding more resources to link
to!

enough with the TFR's already by
[email protected]
i've had it folks. Cheney (Dick right?) is on a bus tour in PA so
everyone has to stop and bow? COME ON MAN! Stop the trucks, cars and
large tricycles too.
these TFRs are getting unsafe and frankly whenever the controllers are
dealing with it they're in a bad mood, unhelpful, and the airspace...

It all depends on what the definition of "cloud" is... by
Geoffrey Barnes
I'm clear on how far away I have to stay from clouds during VFR flight, and
I thought I knew a cloud when I saw one, but...
I took my brother-in-law up for his birthday yesterday morning. It was
pretty darn cool for late August, and all the river valleys were filled with
fog. In fact, several...

Scud running fatal in Maine by
Roger Long
This accident was up our way and I followed the progress of the search. On
the basis of the weather on the day the plane disappeared, I expected to
find that it was a new pilot in over her head. Just goes to show that lots
of experience and type ratings don't make scud running a good idea. ...

GPS for airport navigation by
John Bell
I think that GPS can be helpful for airport ground navigation and avoiding
runway incursions. For some reason, I never see this mentioned in any of
the material on runway incursion. It's not perfect, but if you have one in
the cockpit it might help you maintain situational awareness on the...

Flew a seaplane by
Michael 182
Just returned from a vacation renting a house on a Long Lake in Naples, ME.
Got out for a two hour seaplane lesson from Naples Seaplane Service. What a
great experience!
I have about 1200 hours in 182's, so my seat of the pants flying is pretty
weak. I was flying a Piper Cub, and the first thing...

Cessna 172 vs. Mooney vs. ? by
pjbphd
I'm in the process of taking lessons for my Private Pilot Certificate. I'll
be eventually using my certificate to commute from Tucson to Flagstaff and
will purchase a plane. My training is in a Cessna 172.
Although I'm a way off, I'm beginning to consider planes for my commute. I'
ll be...

Sometimes pilots do dumb things. by
lardsoup
Yesterday I saw the stupidest thing so far in the short time that I've been
flying. I rent out of a VERY
busy uncontrolled field. On most weekends there are a couple of students in
the pattern, banners towers
flying around willy nilly, business jets on long finals, helicopters doing
their against...

Trip Report - Canada (long) by
Andrew Sarangan
Recently I made a trip to Canada (Ontario), and thought I'd share some of
what I learned.
When entering Canada, you must land at a designated airport of entry.
Location and hours are listed on the Canada Customs website. Call them on
the central toll-free number before departing. They will ask for...

Pitts Groundloop by
Michael 182
I was sitting on the FBO bench today when a Pitts groundlooped. The pilot is
fine - he walked away from the plane. The plane seemed to have suffered
pretty minor damage as well. About a 40 degree 12 knot crosswind - certainly
not windy conditions.
The comment by the FBO owner was "the most...

CFI Renewal really 16 hours!!?? by
Robert M. Gary
I noticed that American Flyers and AOPA both say their on-line CFI
renewal is 16hours!!! Is this true of all the CFI on-line renewals?
This seems insane.

Possibly the stupidest idea ever... by
Paul Tomblin
One of the guys who founded our flying club 40+ years ago is still a
member. He's got a lot of experience, but quite frankly some things I've
heard about him scare the hell out of me. But nothing quite as bad as
this: He's proposing that the club does a "Missing Man Formation" over
Bill Law's...

Do brand new big bore Continentals require top end overhaul at 400 hours? by
Corky Scott
I've been talking with a guy who is a new owner of a Bonanza. It has
a Continental IO-520 for an engine. It now has over 1800 hours and
he's been looking at overhaul companies. I asked him what he was
planning and he told me that the cheapest way to get an engine is to
buy a brand new one from...

Verifying flap retraction by
Roger Long
One of the more experienced pilots in our club scared himself climbing out
of a touch and go during which he didn't notice that the flaps had frozen at
20 degrees on our 172.
I've been investigating the flap system on Cessna's and am impressed how
easily a bit of fluff or corrosion in just one...
