Doing float plane training in Canada by
Paul Tomblin
I'm a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident in the US with a US ASEL-IA.
I'd like to get a float plane rating, but the school that most appeals to
me is in Canada. They have information on their web site about getting a
Canadian Limited Term Private Pilot License in order to do the...

Visibility is considered unrestricted if greater than 6 miles??? by
Peter R.
Flying from Buffalo, NY, to Reading, PA, this afternoon, I call up
Cleveland Flight Watch to report a weather pirep.
"Visibility is restricted in haze to about one five miles," I include.
"45 Whisky," the voice responds, "visibility is considered unrestricted if
it is greater than six miles so I...

Brief Hot Springs report by
Wiz
Posted a response earlier and mentioned I was going to this airport,
and there was some interest in it, so I thought I'd post a very brief
trip report.
Took off Tuesday afternoon from Gaithersburg, MD (KGAI - Montgomery
County Airpark). Destination Hot Springs, VA (KHSP - Ingall's...

Kite flying by
Skylune
I saw a few kids flying kites over the weekend. It occurred to me: What
if they were flying the kites real high in the vicinity of GA airports? I
don't think there are any laws about kite flying off airport property.

Pitts S2C by
Brian O'Sullivan
Anybody know where I can get an online version of the pilot operating
manual/handbook for the S2C. I'm taking some instruction in it and would
like to familiarise myself beforehand. I've emailed Aviat and am awaiting a
reply, hope to get the details before the weekend is over. Thanks.

Iowa City Tornado Photos by
Jay Honeck
http://www.alexisparkinn.com/april_tornado_damage.htm
I finally got 'round to uploading these pix to our website.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any aerial shots until after most
of the storm debris had been picked up -- so the aerial photos are
mostly "blue tarps on the roofs" pictures. But...

Helo pilot shortage? by
Skywise
Just a curiosity question, but just heard a radio commercial
for some helicopter pilot school that will take you all the
way to your commercial license in 18 months, all costs defered
until graduation "because of the extreme shortage of helicopter
pilots."
No, I'm not considering the program.
So,...

396 and routing by
dlevy
I'd like to start better using my 396 and am looking for suggestions.
I'm using the internet to keep the database up to date. I'd like to load
STAR's, routes, etc. using a pc program. Is there a program for doing this?
I have the auto option with the Mapsource program - is that what...

Third Class to Sport Pilot by
Dick
What has anyone actually experienced in making the change from a third class
medical to the Sport Pilots "driver" license?
My insurance company has said "no problem unless the policy specifically
states a third class medical is needed" (it doesn't).
Thanks, Dick

Weather chart oddity? by
Dylan Smith
OK, I've never seen this before.
Take a look at the synoptic chart I've saved at
http://www.alioth.net/tmp/fronts.gif
There is a cold front, just south west of Ireland. The 'sharks teeth'
are outlines, rather than filled in. The other week I saw a warm front
drawn like this. What's the difference...

sorry for this ON-TOPIC *gasp* post *g*:
pulled off the Avweb newsletter:
I wonder if 25,000-ft is for quicker certification and they'll end up
applying for higher certification at a later date? Cirrus did that with
their composite airframe life numbers.

AOPA states that "most" pilots are incompetent by
Skylune
From the AOPA intro to the Weather Wise Course:
"Most pilots don't realize that low ceilings and restricted visibilites
are aviation's most deadly killers. With a little knowledge..."
LOL. But the course was fun to take. I liked the audio of the guy with
the Texas drawl who had to land on a...

Devastation in Iowa City Tonight by
Jay Honeck
So I was at our airport commission meeting tonight when the tornado
sirens went off. We had noticed the skies becoming black, but were all
too wrapped up in talk of paving taxiways to pay much heed.
The meeting abruptly adjourned with the sirens, and everyone tried to
find the long-rumored...
