5% SSA Group Insurance Discount by
Jim Skydell
I recently learned that the SSA Group Hull and Liability Insurance
Program through Costello now offers a 5% premium discount for any
insured SSA member who is also a member of AOPA.
A nice way to save a few bucks, or (maybe) pay for the cost of
membership in either of the organizations.

Tow Hook on Cessna 180? by
Stuart Grant
Just purchased a Cessna 180 and hope to use it occasionally for glider
towing. Found an STC for hook installation by Javelin Aircraft which
seems not to be around anymore. Gasser Banner says they don't have one.
Having towed behind a C-180 at Seminole Lake I know it is possible. Tim
Mara says Karl...

New UK Regulations by
I hear as from the 1st October all gliders in the UK will have to be
registered with the CAA and placed on the normal UK aircraft register
carrying the allocated G- marks.
At present the BGA has always overseen this.
What difference will these changes have, besides of course costing us all
more...

Declaring a flight in WinPilot to the Volkslogger by
JohnD
Chuck:
Jerry has been very helpful to me over the past years. Even called me
from Spain to help with what turned-out to be an operator malfunction.
Ooops.
What is your configuration? How are they connected? In some
confugurations (B50) there needs to be a Flt/Dec. switch which in Dec.
mode cuts...

Lapse Rate Question by
Waduino
Have you tried a Google search? It turns up quite a bit of info.
In case it helps:
The dry adiabat is the rate at which unsaturated air cools when lifted.
(Ballpark 3 deg C / 1000').
The moist or saturated adiabat is the rate at which air cools when lifted,
once saturated. (Ballpark 1/2 of the dry...

Plasma Ropes ----- Help by
Dave Martin
To any club using plasma ropes in place of steel.
Having read the benefits of this type of rope, several
UK clubs are interested in its use. One major obstacle
to this, is cutting it during a launch, in the event
of an emergency
So far the best methods appear to be an axe an anvil
type cutter.

Altitude gain: qualitative analysis by
Chris OCallaghan
Flew on Sunday in non-stable conditions. David Pixton flew his Ventus
2b at approx. 800 lbs, and I flew my Ventus 2bx at 1150 lbs. Because
conditions were turbulent, we were unable to do any smooth air
testing, but during the course of 10 pull ups (entry 100 knots, exit
60 knots) we observed the...

Turning radii and spanwise airspeed distribution by
JJ Sinclair
Good observation, Bill. Most long wingers have found it best to keep the nose
pointed towards the outside of the turn. It helps the climb. Your yaw string
should be telling you to, "Put your foot in the inside hole". Just don't do it.
Does that make sense?

Sport Pilot (was SoCal CFIGs needed. by
M B
An unpowered light-sport aircraft (e.g. glider) would
have a maximum never-exceed speed (VNE) of 115 knots,
as VH is not applicable. This speed limitation also
limits the commanded kinetic energy of an aircraft
flown by a pilot holding a sport pilot certificate.
For a VNE equal to 80% of the...

Need G-103 Acro Master Cylinder by

Our club's G-103 Acro needs a new brake master cylinder.
We can probably get one from Grob in Ohio within several
weeks, but we would like to get one sooner.
Does anyone, anywhere, have a master cylinder they
would sell us? Then, we would pay overnight freight
to our club's location in North...

Solo in a 2-32 by
M B
Hollister Gliding Club in northern california solos
students and uses the 2-32 as a primary trainer. I
think their reasoning is that it is useful for sightseeing
and for training, and for those who are 'big boned.'
If I owned a glider operation I'd personally have
students solo an $8000 2-33...
