Ray Gimmey- Well Done by [email protected]
Congratulations to Ray Gimmey for winning the 2014 US 15M national championship. This is not new to Ray, having won quite a number of championships. What is remarkable is the time period over which he has accomplished this. If I recall correctly, his first national win was in 1972 at Minden winning...

55kt Wind Gusts Almost Blows Away Tugs by Six-Seven
I was sent a link to this interesting video shot from a control tower that shows purported 55kt wind gusts (microburst?) almost blowing some SuperCub tugs right off the runway except for some quick thinking getting them airborne by the pilots (in the right way). Not to mention lots of people...

Laminar flow over canopy seam? by J. Nieuwenhuize
Theory predicts that laminar flow is easily triggered to turbulent. Once we go to 3D bodies with a proverse pressure gradient, the flow is much less sensitive and we can get extensive laminar flow. Looking at wind-tunnel and tow tests from Carmichael, Raspet etc, on an axisymmetrical body the flow...

Thanks to Team Mayes, Dale Bush for a great 15 m Nationals by Mark Schmidt L4
Just back from the 15 m Nationals, I want to thank Rex, Noelle, Ben and Nick Mayes for a wonderful job putting on a well-organized, fun and challenging contest. As someone new to Montague I'd also like to thank CD Dale Bush for keeping us safe while pushing us (or at least pushing me). Hope to...

PowerFlarm, ADS-B, GPS again!!! (please don't flame me) by SoaringXCellence
I know PowerFlarm and ADS-B have been discussed all over the net, but I was thinking today about something that I haven't seen (or been able to find): We have a PowerFlarm with a (apparently) good GPS system installed, Altitude encoder, and NMEA data stream output. We have a bunch of ADS-B (out)...

Schleicher Power/Solar rotary switch specs? by noel.wade
Hello, Anyone out there have specs/measurements for the rotary switch that Schleicher installs in their newer gliders, to enable switching between batteries? (see the lower-left part of the panel in this image, as an example: http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/photos/9/2/2/1272229.jpg...

15 Meter Nationals by [email protected]
Way to go Danial Sazhin with a first place for the Duckhawk on day seven at the 15 meter nationals, a win for a young upcoming sailplane pilot, a win for a US made sailplane and another win for Windward Performance. Support "made in the USA".. it doesn't have to come from Europe any more.

GlidePort Flight Visualization by [email protected]
I have been using the free iPhone app to record student flights. The club members watch from the club house computer. At the end if the day we replay for student debrief. Anyone else tried out the 4 resolution logging/playback? It's pretty cool.

Cambridge file conversions for OLC (yet again) by Steve Leonard[_2_]
So, everything was working fine, and the last two flights have not been accepted. In looking at the file that I can download from OLC, it does NOT have the same name as the file I uploaded. Is OLC once again unhappy with Cambridge and kicking out converted Cambridge Model 10/20/25 files? Only...

Anyone have experience with SoarNV? by [email protected]
If anyone has used them to finish an add on rating I'd like to hear about your experience. How many flights before check ride sign off? Any issues with the FBO or the DPE? A few people have recommended Williams Soaring, however when I spoke to the instructor at Williams (not Rex) I got the...

Key to aviation safety revealed! by Andy[_1_]
The key to aviation safety has finally been revealed! Who would have thought that the reef knot, which has been familiar since early childhood to anyone with the simplest knowledge of knots, could make such a difference. I had previously thought that knot tying was only of great importance to...

Killing the flagman at US Contest by Steve Koerner
It hasn't happened yet, but we are going to kill or maim the flagman if we don't change our ways. It's just a matter of time. This has become my personal pet peeve. Over the years, I have personally observed a lot of gliders drop a wing and veer off the runway. And admittedly a number of...

Handling differences between the 15m vs 16.6 ASW-20CL? by Gary[_5_]
This past week I purchased an ASW-20CL. Wondered if anyone has any thoughts on the handling qualities of the 2 configurations. The 15m version is equiped with Nixon winglets. The previous owner never flew with the extended tips so could not offer opinion or advice. Thanks, Gary Adams
