Of tow hooks and brakes
The Region 9 contest is done and of course today is the most wind free day since the contest started. To say the contest weather was breezy is putting it mildly.
The wind put a severe strain on gliders and pilot skill. The pilot skill was there but I think in several...

Why do Finance Companies Hate Sailplanes? by
noel.wade
Anyone know why US Banks & Aircraft Finance companies are so averse to
glider loans? I can get my Sonex aircraft _KIT_ (as a pile of parts on
the floor of my garage) financed through NAFCO or others... But when
researching loans for my next sailplane they all say "sorry, no can
do" as soon as they...

Glider Financing by
Echo
I initially financed through the Lea County people in Hobbs. Glad the option was there, but the terms were rough. I then took my case to my employer's credit union, where it was turned down. Even though they serve aviation professionals, they told me they don't do sailplanes. I briefly...

Region V South contest by
Hartley Falbaum
First--Kudos to Larry "01" Goddard as CD. In this, his first outing as CD, he was faced with difficult (to say the least) weather. Thanks to the Area Task, and good weather information from our WX guru, Fernando "FS" Silva, he managed to pull three days out of a hat! Intelligent use of the task...

Glider Financing by
Clay[_4_]
I suspect most buyers of, say, a Porsche 911 are leasing or financing. They are not paying cash and are not buying as part of a syndicate. All Noel is saying is we should be able to do the same. I entirely agree and thank him for fighting the good fight. Clay

fin/wing tanks freezing by
Matt Herron Jr.
Can anyone share some wisdom on using water at high elevations for long durations? How do you know your fin or wing tanks will not freeze? If I am at 18K for 6 hrs in the Sierras, I really don't want my vertical stab splitting open in flight. Has this ever happened? Any guidance would be...

Why not put an audible variometer in every glider? by
son_of_flubber
Here is something that you might be able to do to improve glider safety for everybody (yourself included).
Buy yourself a brand new variometer (you deserve it!). Give your old "perfectly good audible variometer" to a club, a commercial training operation, or one of those pocket-empty "first...

WinPilot PRO 12 or 13 for PNA by
Alexander Müller
I try to get WinPilot PRO 12 or 13 running on a LX Mini Map pro.
I saw in some posts, that people are working with a PNA Pro 12 Version.
On the Winpilot webpage the links are not correct and only guide to an PNA Pro 10 Version or to PNA ADV versions.
Does anyone know, where I can download the...

The Aviators Goes Gliding (at last) by
Charlie Papa[_2_]
A Dutch roll as we call it, is a roll to one side to about 30 degrees, followed immediately by a roll to the other side, - back and forth, left aileron + left rudder, followed by right aileron and rudder.
If the pilot has input a coordinated level of aileron and rudder, the longitudinal axis...

WinPilot and Mini Map II by
Dave Springford
Is anyone out there running Winpilot Pro on the LX mini map?
Do you need the PNA version of Winpilot, or with the Win CE 5 on the Minimap, does the PDA version still work.
Anyone have it connected to a 302? Do you still get all the air data from the 302 that you had on the PDA?
Thanks,

First glider flight toward rating add-on by
BrianM
I've been getting back into the air after being on the ground for several years and I thought getting a glider rating would be a good way to not only get a BFR but would be fun.
My wife and I happened to be out on the west coast with a couple days to burn so I took my first glider flight out...

Really good variometers vs..... by
Uncle Fuzzy[_2_]
I'm part owner of a Janus C. It's equipped with a Borgelt B100. It works, it's interesting, but it's not exactly easy to use. The one reason I would not toss it is that it drives the only varios in the glider. It also has a Speed to fly feature that I've grown to like, switching modes according...

PowerFLARM Flight Circles in SeeYou by
John Carlyle
I was using SeeYou to compare flights recorded with my Volkslogger with those from my PowerFLARM core, to see if there were any discrepancies. The position recordings overlay very nicely.
But some of the flight traces from the PowerFLARM core (v3.0 firmware)have little blue circles on them. These...
