Garmin 296 strangeness by Robert M. Gary
I experienced some strangeness with my 296 the other night. We recently upgraded to the latest software and I've taken it on a trip to NM. The other night I noticed the unit did not power on when I turned on the bus voltage (its wired into the cig lighter full time). So I turned it on manually. It...

Various ATC questions by fromTheShadows
A few questions on ATC: 1. If I am told to "depart XYZ heading 150" while IFR, and the last heading given to me by ATC does not quite take me to an intercept of the XYZ VOR, should I turn to intercept the VOR? Should I wait for ATC to tell me to turn directly towards the VOR? Should I turn...

Hey, Mxsmanic by Mark
Different from flying schools, you should look into an FAA "training center", defined as: "FAA-approved training centers are certificated under 14 CFR part 142. Training centers like certificated pilot schools, operate in a structured environment with approved courses and curricula, and stringent...

SMO MYF by origgiro
I was thinking of buying a plane to fly regularly between SMO (Santa Monica) and MYF (Montgomery Airport, near San Diego), for instance a Diamond DA20-A1, which can go about 104 knots. However, the flight path includes both Pendleton and LAX (perhaps others), which presumably could cause delays....

Why are center tanks not used? by tom418
When you say "filled" do you mean amount of fuel in the each tank compared to each tank's capacity? On a B727, there is a limitation which calls for tanks 1 and 3 to contain no more than 2000 lbs than tank 2 (the center tank), prior to takeoff. So, if you fill tanks 1 and 3 (about 12,000 lbs)...

Checklist Mnemonics by Casey Wilson
Whilst wandering around the cyber-wastelands the other day, I came across http://socal.pilotinside.com/tools.asp. The site has lots of good stuff there, including a 29-page PDF file describing maneuvers for the C-172. Problem is, it refers to a couple checklist mnemonics I am not familiar with....

Diamond Eclipse Prop by scott sher
I am a private pilot with 450hrs. Currently I own a grumman tiger and have been looking to move into something newer. I have been looking at the diamond c1 eclipse (2001-2002). Today I spoke to an A&P who informed me of a strange phenomenon. One of the katana c1's at the flight school had shed 2...

Best Oshkosh Investment by EDR
If you had bought $1000 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original $1000. With Worldcom, you would have less than $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Miller Lite (the beer, not the stock) one year ago, drank all the...
