Traffic warning devices by
AK
Does anyone have any experience with one of these devices?
PCAS XRX $1795
PCAS MRX $549
Is there enough value in XRX's ability to show direction?
Last year I flew a plane from NH to PA. I had a Garmin 430 with
traffic. I was at 8,000 feet and about 80 nm west of New York City
when the instrument...

Aluminum top Cobra trailers leaks - how frequent? by
AK
A few people told me that their Cobra trailers with aluminum tops
developed leaks. I wonder how frequent this problem is. Obviously
aluminum top is nice to keep it looking good, but one of the the
purposes of a trailer is too keep the glider inside dry. In New
England we sometimes get 4 inches of...

302 wind calculation by
AK
Does anyone have any insight into how a 302 calculates wind? How good
is it in regards to wind a straight flight with very little turning?
How valuable is it on a ridge? What does it need in order to
calculate
probable wind one 360 turn, part of a turn, two turns?
Any information is appreciated.

What to use to make a mold? by
AK
I want to make a small mold I would later use to create a fiberglass
container to hold lead weight. It would be nice if mold material can
withstand 500 degrees Fahrenheit so I can pour lead into it and then
cover it by fiberglass. Alternatively I would use the mold to create a
fiberglass container...

TO RULES COMMETTEE PLEASE READ – Nationals no ballast day by
AK
Nationals can now declare a “No ballast” day without all pilots
agreeing.
A motor glider or a heavy glider will have a considerable advantage
especially on a good day if this rule is not modified.
Here is an example, imagine Diana 2 (420 lb empty with instruments)
competing with ASG-29 15 m (620...

Second O-ring on a triple source probe - how to replace? by
AK
Does anyone have any experience in replacing the second O-ring in a
triple source socket? I am not talking about the third small O-ring
but the second O-ring which is the same as the first. Taking it out
was not difficult but putting a new one in might be a different story.
I thought there might be...

Electrical questions by
AK
1) Should aircraft use switches for both positive and negative (SPXX
vs. DPXX switches) or just the positive (especially in application
from point 2 below) ? I was planning on switching just the positive
only and have the negative side permanently connected; both batteries
and negative of each...

Turn and Bank indicator and competition by
AK
I have a turn and bank indicator installed in my glider. I would like
to fly in a competition this year and I read somewhere that this kind
of instrument is not allowed to be used during a competition flight.
The question is; do I have to remove the instrument all together or
can the competition...

Competition Ground Crew by
AK
The last time I flew in competition was about 20 years ago in Europe.
I have never flown in competition in the US, but I am certainly going
to change that this year.
How often do you go to competition without a ground crew and if you do
how do you deal with this situation? Are contest organizers...

required LD versus required MC to make it home ?? by
akiley
Hi All,
I'm aware of and use the math formula to get my rental Cirrus back to
home base, but I like to back it up with SeeYou mobile. I know it's
recommended to use required LD to target making sure you have entered
a correct polar and safety altitude. But this doesn't account for
winds does it?...

Low test numbers on Standard Cirrus, what could it be? by
akiley
Hi All,
I'm fairly new to soaring, but thought it might be fun to test our clubs Standard Cirrus to see if it was getting advertised L/D. I jumped in with not enough understanding of all the factors that effect performance, other than reading how Dick Johnson does his tests.
I took a tow to 6000...

Soaring Accident Database? by

Anyone know of a database of soaring accident statistics. For example a spreadsheet broken down into fields such as off airport, during landing, on tow, during contest etc. Would be interesting to study by sorting and filtering in various ways.

L-Nav question for anyone still using one by
akiley
I just started flying an ASW-19b at our club that has an L-Nav, GPS-NAV, Vario combo installed. When I turn the unit on, I get the barro page. I can set the altimeter here but the Go button does nothing. So I can't get to the main screen. Yesterday I gave up, left the L-Nav on. About 3 or 4...

Selecting landout airports by
akiley
I'm a member of a club that has marginal trailers for our ships. Because of this, and the multitude of small airports in our area, I usually just airport hop for cross country flights. We also have unpredictable landout options because 90% of the fields seem to be corn, which at the wrong time of...
