XCSoar Questions by
Paul Remde
Hi XCSoar users,
I am new to XCSoar. I am currently reading the manual for version 6.2 and
playing with XCSoar on my PC and iPAQ hx4700.
My goal is to become a technical resource for XCSoar users. But since I'm
new, it will take me some time to get up to speed.
I'll be perfectly honest, in...

Virga, rain, cloudsuck - how close do you get? by
ProfJ
Typing this with my fireproof suit on...last weekend I tried to duck between two rainy cumulus clouds on my glide back to home base. As I went through the gap it became filled with virga and I was sucked rapidly upwards, probably would have been about 10m/s if I had not had the nose well down. ...

The US Team selection process in future years by
XC
I am starting this post to get the topic off one individual's personality. The 2018 team has ben selected as outlined in the new process. Claims that the process was not carried out fairly have no basis in fact. The Team has very little time to prepare and needs to get to work.
Here is a summary...

Phantom flights? by
[email protected]
I'm not the OLC police, but these flights are extremely odd. Taking off with an ASH-25 from Lost River Resort, even with a 260 Pawnee would be sketchy. Self launch is out of the question. (Especially when the airfield is covered with snow) Also, None of the N numbers on this fellow's stable of...

Radio acting up by
Blake Seese 3Y
Hello all,
My Becker 4201 just started acting up. Specifically, it has a cyclic regular dead spot when transmitting, so the person listening to you gets about half of each word. It receives just fine, and all functions work as they should. Same thing happens with a fully charged battery or one...

Encrypted Flarmnet files and 3rd party software by
jfitch
I think this merits its own thread. Due to legal concerns, Flarmnet has encrypted their files, and as I understand it most displays including the Butterfly will no longer show pilot or glider information. This is separate from the opt in/out of tracking as I understand it.
I liked the ability to...

Red V symbol (log file not valid) after OLC upload. by
Shane Neitzey
I use a Cambridge 25. Also using the cai2igc4olcb zip exe files for
conversion.
The program appears to successfully convert stating Seal; intact, Date
integrity check PASS, Security check PASS
After upload to OLC, the notorious RED V symbol (log file not valid)
appears for the flight.
Using...

Low approaches in ground effect by
CV
First a disclaimer: I understand the security issues involved
in the following and would not encourage anyone to try this
at home, but I am interested in the theoretical side of it.
Imagine you get things wrong and are caught out low on final,
still a fair distance out, and it looks marginal...

Ridge Soaring? by
Walt Connelly
Okay, I'm looking for a place to do some ridge soaring. Never done it, it doesn't exist where I fly. (Seminole Lake GP, Florida) Any suggestions as to the best ridge soaring and availability of instruction?

Grob 103 Twin II Brake Master Cylinder by
Mike McCarron
My club has a 1983 Grob 103 Twin II that needs a new master cylinder. Over
the years the Grob factory has made changes to the system without full
documentation and as a result the US distributor can not be sure of how I
go about purchasing the proper master cylinder for this glider.
If you or...

Mylar seals for elevator by
[email protected]
Hey guys, what's your opinion on the use of mylar seals at the
horizontal stab/elevator gap? Specifically for LS ships. Do people opt
not to use them for fear of "lifting" tape or mylar and causing
elevator effectiveness issues? Losing elevator effectiveness is
certainly a valid concern, but does...

The Relief Band for Nausea Relief by
jodom
I've reviewed the relief band in the context of my experience as a
glider pilot. I'd love to hear comments from other pilots about their
experiences.

SSA Leadership after 12/31? by
Bullwinkle
Fellow soaring fans,
Early in the course of the SSA crisis, involving embezzlement and fraud on
the part of the SSA's CFO, the entire Executive Committee committed to
resign before the end of this calendar year (except Phil Umphries, who was
too new to have been tainted by the scandal).
Since...

What is Purpose of Sports Class Nationals? by
Frank Paynter
According to the 2006 Sports Class Nationals Rules:
'The purpose of the Sports Class Nationals is to determine
the 2006 Sports Class Champion, and to select team
members for international Club Class competitions'
With most of the gliders at the latest 2006 Nats in
the ASW27/28 & LS-8 range, does...

Pre-launch Checklists. by
Nyal Williams
I'd like to see posted various generalized, and glider-non-specific
pre-lauch checklists with the letters followed by explanation of what it
means. I've heard a couple of variations on familiar ones, and I'd like
to get them all down. I also welcome further discussion.
