Ballistic chute saves 4 souls by
Bob Babcock
On the 10th a Cirrus SR-20 pilot with 3 passengers on board deployed
his ballistic chute over the Canadian Rockies and landed safely on a
remote ridge with no injuries. The plane dropped a wing and entered
a non recoverable spin or spiral at 9500 feet and landed on the 4200
foot ridge. The cause...

Refinishing a Wood Prop by
Kyle Boatright
I've noticed that my prop is beginning to show signs of wear -chips in the
leading edge, and cracks in the clear finish. Given that I'm having shoulder
surgery in a couple of weeks (and probably won't be up to flying until the
arm is substantially healed), I should have some time on my hands to...

Carbon Fiber - Achieving Glossy Finish w/o GelCoat by
RKT
I am trying to piece together the process of vacuum bagging a CF part from
several sources and comments. I am trying to achieve a glossy finish on the
mold side of the finished part.
I though that the gloss that I saw on a purchased part was achieved from
GelCoat. The manufacturer tells me no -...

Ceconite v. Poly Fiber - Is one better than the other?? by
DPB
Hello to the group.
I'm probably going to be acquiring a '46 Champ project in the near future
and I've never done a recover before. I've been reading a little about
Ceconite and Poly Fiber - For you old heads at this - Is one better than
another? Are there plusses & minuses that I should know...

Big John wrote:
Local paper said the Wright Flyer got ripped off in Canada.
Just to clarify, the truck hauling the Flyer was stolen.
The flyer itself was not.

suggestions/ plans for simple inexpensive hangar space? by
TJ400
Hopefully in the next year or so, my PA22 to Sportsman 2+2 conversion
will be ready for flight. Has anyone have plans or ideas for a simple
but dry and functional hangar space..
Really just want to keep it out of the weather with nothing fancy and
only enough room for the plane and room to do...

Fabric covering processes by
Jerry Guy
I'm working on a fabric repair on a Pitts, but I'm unsure as to which
process was used. I'm familiar with dope processes. This material
appears to have no base tint to the fabric (green nitrate/red
polyfiber). There is no silver UV coating. There is a white/light grey
base coat and a very glossy...

Elegant engineering by
Bob Chilcoat
In the latest Air & Space magazine is a surprisingly technical article on
the spar problems on the T-34 Mentors. It shows how Mentor wings (and I
presume Bonanza and many other Beech wings) are assembled. Instead of being
riveted completely together they are in three main pieces. (1) A main...

Confessions of a Dumb Guy by
Veeduber
Most of you have never heard of Vernon Payne. He's best known as the designer
of a spiffy little biplane called the Knight Twister. Rag & tube fuselage,
solid spruce spars, plywood skins on cantilevered wings. Slicker than snot on
a door knob. First flew about 1929 and continues doing so today...

removing old, dried, masking tape by
Michael Horowitz
Someone used masking tape many years ago to cover some screwheads on
my leading edge. Pulling it off only gives me strips of masking tape.
Any suggestions on how to remove this stuff? - Mike
