How to simply determine the L/D of your glider by jan
Hi Gang Like you all I have questioned what the best L/D of my 3 (now 1) gliders - DB800B, Stemme S10-VT and SparrowHawk were in reality suspecting that real L/Ds would be lower than the manufacturers published values. I have used a PDA for many years switching it between gliders. Software is...

Ventus rigging advice, please? by John McLaughlin
I've recently started flying a Ventus2. I can't rig the thing without a lot of struggle. The trouble is, there's a cover above the spars and you can't see anything once the first wing is in. I struggle to get the second wing to fit, never knowing whether it's a bit too high or a bit too low....

Nimbus 4 Accident by Bill
I posted the message below on the thread, "Nimbus 4DT accident 31 July 2000 in Spain." I am posting it again for better visibility. Stan Hall presented his analysis of the Nimbus-4DB accident in Minden, NV, 1999. Stan's analysis is scary, to say the least. The article, Probing for the Smoking...

Canopy causes cockpit fire by Bob C
Yesterday afternoon Mark Mocho (MM Fabrication) opened the canopy of his Pegasus to get his cell phone. By the time he made a call to me, his soaring hat, which was lying atop the glare shield, was smoking. The canopy was acting like a big magnifying glass and focusing the sun's rays onto a...

AL-12: New ultralight sailplane by ISoar
The US distributor of Aeros hang gliders has announced that the Ukranian company's ultralight sailplane has had it's first flight. This craft was built using the wing of Aero's rigid wing hang glider, the Stalker. It was designed to be towed up by the same tugs hang gliders use. I wonder what...

FAA to ground 80% of Glider Training Fleet... it's just a question of when by son_of_flubber
I'm not alarmist to say that the FAA is going to ground 80% of the senescent USA glider training fleet sometime soon. The only question is when. The L-13s are being recycled. The few people who know how to properly inspect and keep the 27 wooden Schleichers KA-* gliders flying safely are...

Club Class vs. Sports Class by noel.wade
OK, so I made a long post in one thread about competition classes... 5U started another thread about the Rules Committee and I was really tempted to respond to Karl's comments there; but I didn't want to hijack the topic. So I'll post this in a new topic instead: I'm a low-time glider pilot...

FAA sticks to its guns on not allowing solo glider flight for out ofcurrency power pilots by [email protected]
The FAA is sticking to its guns in holding that a rated power pilot who is out of currency in his power rating cannot solo in a glider when the transition pilot is not current (no current flight review) in his other rating. The most recent legal opinion is dated today, April 27, and addressed to...

15 M Time Management Nationals by Kilo Charlie
Hi Jonathan- I assume that by the "ASA" you mean the Arizona Soaring Association and our basically unamimous voice against the "15 minute rule" and the one mile cylinder. First of all I don't understand the point that you are making since in your opening statement you say that "the contest was...

IGC Google Earth Replay by [email protected]
may be someone is interested in a small programm ( http://ywtw.de/igcsim.html ) that allows you to replay IGC-files in Google Earth. It's a replay, without use of kml, best for flights in the mountains :-)

As you may already know, I am ordering a new ASH31Mi. I am in the process of coming up with the panel layout and instrument selection. I would love to here from other pilots what they consider to be their dream panel (cost is not an issue). Tom

Cobra Trailer Fenders by Patrick McMahon
Hey all, I trailered a (new to me and a partner) glider from Ontario to Alberta last week and through the trip blew out both trailer tires on the late-80's aluminum Cobra trailer and destroyed the fenders on the trailer through the event. The first blowout (1:15am east of Madison, Wisconsin)...

mini-map by Gaetan Trudel
Hi The LX web site says that I can use the MIni-map kb with my LX 5000. It is somewhat pricey at $ 1600 with Seeyou mobile at twice the price of a OUDIE who is not really readable in the sun. Anyone has use it and care to comment. Regards S6
