The Comair crash reminds me... by Kyler Laird
Years ago I was leaving Purdue http://www.airnav.com/airport/LAF before the tower opened. (I think I was headed to Hamfest with some friends. I don't usually get airborne that early.) As I taxied to runway 5 I heard the local turboprop commuter (Mesaba, I think) call a taxi to runway 10. I was...

With the wind? by smallg
Okay, I've never even had a flying lesson, which may explain it, but yesterday afternoon I stopped by a local airport to watch some planes, and noticed that the tower had them all taking off and landing more *with* the wind than against it. The wind was blowing at around 10-12 mph (around 10 or so...

Pre-Oshkosh Fly-In Pool Party Sunday, July 27th! by Montblack
("Wayne" wrote) Free beer is good. A friend of mine named his band "Free Beer" they always wrote that on the sign in front of the bar. Got mixed results.... There's an old (1933) Jimmy Durante/Buster Keaton movie where the G-Men are coming to inspect "The Old Defunct Brewery"...

Trip report: Cirrus SR-22 demo flight by Jose
Last year at SnF I stopped by the Cirrus booth and indicated interest in the Cirrus, leading to an offer of a demo flight. Scheduling problems prevented this from actually happening for over a year, but today the wait paid off. A cold front had come through yesterday, bringing rain, mist, low...

Airport Support Groups - Group Email? by Jay Honeck
A year ago I started an airport support group called "Friends of Iowa City Airport" to help save our threatened airport. It has now grown to over 170 members, and sending memos, updates and emails to such a large group has become unwieldy. For a variety of reasons I would like to stick with a...

Unbelievable Airbus A380 vertical Take-off + Amazing Air Show ( HD ) Paris Air show 2013 by Larry Dighera
Wanna see, what happens if you place two former military pilots of the French Navy in the cockpit of an Airbus A380? A vertical take-off and some acrobatic maneuvers are the result. Two pilots who previously worked for the French Navy have been working as test pilots for Airbus since a few years....

New GPS Visualizer featu "range rings" by Adam Schneider
Thanks to a request by Darren Bedwell of the Central Indiana Soaring Society, I've added a new feature to the Geographic Calculators page at GPS Visualizer: "range rings." (I don't know what the official name for something like this would be, so I've borrowed a term that I've seen on weather radar...

Bird strike by Jase Vanover
I posted yesterday about my first solo, and planned to do some more uneventful circuits today but ended up having a postable experience once again. On final I noticed a bunch of white dots on the runway... seagulls. We had seen them congregating around the runway during runup and takeoff. My...

FAA's Answer to ATC Retirement Bubble Staffing Shortfall by Larry Dighera
Isn't a policy that reduces staffing, and then authorizes mandatory overtime (with its federally mandated time-and-a-half pay rate) just a bit irrational? UNION: FAA "STAFFING TO BUDGET" The FAA seems intent on challenging long-established norms in terms of staffing levels,...

"Clear Prop!" in Mandarin by Darkstar
Any zhongwen speaking ppl over here? How do you call out "Clear prop!" in Mandarin when you mean "Keep away from the prop -- I'm starting the engine." Used as a standard phrase when flying small planes (Cessna, YAK, etc). Don't ask me why I need this. I do! It's a principle! :-)
