This happened trying to land back at the field after a cable break. Very sad
indeed.

Slip to landing on PPG practical test by
Roger Worden
I'm preparing for my Private test, and in discussing it with the local FAA
examiner, he indicated that one item on the test is a landing with no drag
devices, using only a turning and forward slips. As he explained it, the
task in the PTS is to demonstrate the ability to land totally...

required LD versus required MC to make it home ?? by
akiley
Hi All,
I'm aware of and use the math formula to get my rental Cirrus back to
home base, but I like to back it up with SeeYou mobile. I know it's
recommended to use required LD to target making sure you have entered
a correct polar and safety altitude. But this doesn't account for
winds does it?...

Using Plasma Rope For Winch Tows by
Craig Freeman
We recently converted from 3/16 7x9 cable to 3/16 plasma rope on our winch.
"Plasma", made from Honeywell "Spectra" fiber, seems to have some real
advantages over wire or cable. Some benifits include light weight, 11.48lbs
per thousand, (that's not much even converted to metric!!), hollow braid
(no...

Ventus rigging advice, please? by
John McLaughlin
I've recently started flying a Ventus2. I can't rig the thing without a lot
of
struggle. The trouble is, there's a cover above the spars and you can't see
anything once the first wing is in.
I struggle to get the second wing to fit, never knowing whether it's a bit
too
high or a bit too low....

Bill Gawthrop "F8" Accident - Sun 07/13/2014 - His Status by
WaltWX[_2_]
Bill Gawthrop who won the U.S. Open Nationals at Montague on July 3rd, is doing well after the crash of his beautiful JS-1c Jet at Truckee, CA. I have not talked directly with Bill, only his wife Dianne. The circumstances of the crash remain unclear, but seem to be unrelated to any mechanical...

I wish someone would write a soaring book on flight computers. How to choose one, program, trouble shoot them, use them. Combine book with YouTube explanations.

Hero emulation by
son_of_flubber
I stumbled across a young 150 hour glider pilot online, who had recently seen a low pass on a Grand Prix video. He thought 'that was neat', and so he decided to 'try that at home' on his own. He landed cleanly on his first attempt.

Wheel brake effectiveness standards by
Kenn Sebesta
Does anyone have any data, preferably quantitative, about what sort of braking performance is required? On the one hand, it would seem that effective braking is primordial for safe landing in the event of an outlanding, but on the other hand many gliders seem to have inadequate brakes, to put it...

Are off-airport landouts common and/or dangerous? by
Charles Ethridge
Hi all.
First off, I was a fairly experienced CFI and Chief Flight Instructor with a great record, and am now a Commercial Glider Pilot, so I'm not a total newbie in the glider world.
I realize that my initial question may be obvious to some, but here in South Florida, we NEVER land out in fields...
