Legal? - SPOT Helium Balloon Race by
Paul Remde
Hi,
This was a crazy idea I had that my son thought would be a lot of fun. The
question is whether or not it is legal or advisable.
The idea is to tie a bunch of helium party balloons to a SPOT unit, then let
it go and see how far it gets. We would chase it down in a car.
Theoretically, we...

Wing Drop, Aerotow vs Winch, Grass vs Pavement. by
Brian[_1_]
Excuse me while I turn the short "Always release on Wing Drop" into a long discussion. I least my discussion is long. But like the "Impossible Turn" for power aircraft I suspect the real answer is when you really start to analyze it we find "it Depends" or "when in doubt release" but help me...

Life glider hours with winch by

Hi all.
I listened from some pilots that the glider life hours reduce if you use winch start.
Is that true? I looked for some data about and I did not found.

Tinted canopies by
Gerry Simpson
What has been the experience among the readers of this sight with respect to colorless or blue tinted canopies and perception changes. For example, do haze domes look essentially the same? Do crops and ground features appear altered? It was conveyed to me from a reasonably knowledgeable source that...

Aerotow Regulations and Rope Specifications by
Markus Graeber
I am in the process of writing up some regulations for aerotowing to
standardize operations and ensure safe procedures for us here in
Colombia. The civil aviation authorities don't know a thing about the
intricacies of aerotowing so we are on our own with how we want to go
about it. Hence the...

Full-span flaperons as airbrakes? by
Bret
Hi, do any gliders have full-span flaperons that also act as airbrakes
(say at 70-90 degree), or do you lose all aileron authority when the
flaperons are that deflected?

Looking for some help from the group... I'm putting together a presentation
(might be overhead viewgraphs and/or a series of posters) for the general
public on soaring and I want to catch their interest and imagination. For

Best club and commercial web sites by
Vsoars
Which clubs and commercial operations have outstanding web sites that
make people eager to give soaring a try? Out of date sites with
pictures that don’t include recent improvements and photographs that
are obviously from another decade can’t help us recruit members.
Great web sites can. Please...

Mini Cams by

A new member at our club had a small video camera, almost like a bullet

gig card for this camera. He just clips it to his hat.
I did not get the name of this camera. But I think this member stated
that a famous skateboarder...

Crosswind Landings... But airspeed? by
Jmarc99
After having read all the posts in the previous thread, no one said a word
about de right airspeed to keep along the final approach... whatever this is done
with a sideslip or crabbing.
I am wondering what should be the right airspeed (calculated or not, 1.3 Vs + wind speed)
to get in a crosswind...

Newbie question: staying calmly behind glider tug by

I'm planning to join the local soaring club and had my first ride last
weekend. I was eager to take the controls while being towed and was
enormously humbled by the experience.
I've had my ppsel for several years, but do not have many hours under
my belt. Never the less, I was looking forward to...
