OH IO520 or replace with IO550 by Paul kgyy
Any info about relative cost of a high quality overhaul of an IO520 compared with replacement by a (say) second run IO550? "high quality" means to me, at least, either ECI or Millennium cylinders and a nationally known shop.

Anybody use Airtech Instrument at BFI? by [email protected]
I took our sick DG to Airtech Instrument at BFI in Seattle. They can overhaul ours for around $450, or provide an exchange overhauled unit for $495, which seems like a reasonable price. (This is an Edo/Mitchell vacuum DG with heading bug for the AP). Does anyone have any feedback (good, bad or...

Need A/P to do pre buy near RDU by Mike Z.
I would appreciate if someone could steer me to a good picky A+P. I need a pre-buy done on a 172 near RDU Raleigh Durham. It would be even better if it was an IA and things go OK we can turn it into an annual. Mike Z

General Costs by [email protected]
What are some of the costs associated with owning an airplane? Particularly, I'm partial to a single engine four seater probably of the Mooney's I'm not to leary of costs such as planned/unplanned maintenance but admittedly understand nothing of the FAA regulations involved. Is there some kind of...

Alternator Issue? by Jon Kraus
Tell me what you think about this issue: I flew 4443H ('79 Mooney 201) Saturday morning for a couple of hours. One time during the flight, for about 5 minutes the High / Low voltage light was flickering. It did stop flickering, the ammeter wasn't showing a discharge, and the battery voltage...

Seat Cover Recommendations by Jon Kraus
I was looking through the Aircraft Spruce catalog this morning and stumbled across the Aerosheep Australian Sheepskin Seat Covers for .36 AMU's a pair. I though that this would be a nice addition to 43H's interior. Any of you folks go this route? Any other recommendations would be appreciated....

Replacement Altimeter brand names? by [email protected]
In the continuing saga of my altimeter woes, I've discovered that my current unit has been forced into obsolecense. It's a Macleod unit, and most overhaul places say they won't touch them. The guy who did the IFR cert says, "Buy a brand name like United or Kollsman." Any thoughts on one...

gpsmap antiglare by Mike Noel
Has anyone tried anti-reflective plastic film on the gpsmap or another device? Garmin says there is an anti-reflective coating on the screen but it doesn't look like it to me. With the 496 gizmo mounted on the copilot side I've been able to knock down the glare by putting a kid's black tee...

Replacement altimeter suggestions by [email protected]
All I can say is, "CRAP!" The altimeter didn't quite pass the IFR certification. It had some "erratic" movement, required lots of tapping, and then would bounce back and forth between the acceptable error limits for the certification. A couple altitudes were over the limit. The guy doing...
