Missed approach (?) when glideslope fails by
Yossarian
You are on an ILS approach, DH 200'. The localizer-only MDA is 500'.
You are at 300' in IMC when the GS fails. Assuming you are timing the
approach, is it legal to climb to 500 and continue the approach?

GPS Question by
rps
I thought I understood this, but maybe not. GPS systems were certified
for approaches after I got my instrument ticket, so my knowledge is
more anecdotal than from actual training.
Can an approach-certified GPS be used to substitute for NDB and DME
during an approach (or even en route)? What if...

Need help with Narco LORAN LRN 840 by
Benjamin Gawert
I got an old NARCO LRN-840 LORAN-C that I want to reanimate. Sadly I
only got the unit itself, no manuals or cables. What I need is a pinout
of the rear card-edge connector and informations about what voltage it
requires etc. If someone has a manual as pdf or any other electronic
format it would be...

Garmin 430/530 WAAS upgrade reminder Nov 15 by
Paul kgyy
Garmin has announced that the upgrade cost for the WAAS enhancement to
the G430/530 series is $1500 IF you sign up for the upgrade by November
15. Without a signup, the upgrade cost is $2000. When the upgrade is
available, you have the option to reject it.
I know that there is considerable...

Student as PIC in IMC? by
Geo. Anderson
I'll be taking my checkride in a few weeks and one of my goals has been
to have at least 10 hours of actual IMC before I take the ride. It's
going well; I'm at 9.1 and only 2 of those were just boring a hole in
clouds on a cross country.
I have been under the impression that I could log PIC time...

Narco DGO-10 by
Michael
Does anyone out there have installation data on the old Dog-10?
Also, I'm looking at driving one with a KNS-80 (basically the same
signals as all the other King stuff) and I know it can be done - but I
don't know how. If anyone out there has any information or a source
for the installation data,...

VOR Check question by
Michael 182
I was told by an avionics guy that if a plane has VOR's they must be
accurate to file IFR, even if I file /G.
FAR 91.171 says "(a) No person may operate a civil aircraft under IFR using
the VOR system of radio navigation unless the VOR equipment of that
aircraft..."
I'm not debating the logic of...

Garmin 530 WAAS upgrade - what's involved? by
Paul Tomblin
We recently put a 530 in one of our planes. Garmin says the upgrade to
WAAS is only going to be $1500. Sure, that's what they charge for the
guts, but what is this likely to run to once the shop starts adding their
labour costs, etc. Is another field approval needed, or what sort of
paper...

contact terminology? by

ATC: airplane 67Z, "traffic westbound at your 2 o'clock, 5000 feet"
Now, if I see the traffic, it's "airplane 67Z has the traffic"
What if I don't have it visually, but it shows up on my traffic
display? I've heard stuff like "yep, got 'im on the fishfinder" but
I'm wondering if there is a...

Radar contact before squawk by
David Brooks
I learned something Friday night while getting in some night solo time. I
called Whidbey Approach for a few minutes of flight following and possibly
clipping their Class C, and the controller annonced radar contact, and then
issued a squawk. I hadn't given my position (I wasn't too sure where I...

compass turns with high mounted compass (Cessna 152) by

I'm just starting out my instrument training in a Cessna 152 that has a
compass mounted at the top of the windshield. Here's a sample picture for
those who have never seen it, http://www.airliners.net/open.file/643201/M
Can anyone tell me if it's still possible to do compass turns under the...

More KAP 140 questions by
News
I have another KAP 140 question for the group. Is there a way to have a
dual axis w/ pre-select model of the KAP140 act as though it is only a
single axis? Sometimes I want to engage the AP in heading mode but take
care of pitch myself. Engaging the AP in heading mode makes the AP
automatically...

First IFR flight after checkride by
Wizard of Draws
August 22, 2004 12:30 2.2 hrs. (.4 actual)
First flight after my IFR checkride, with actual!
For one of the few times in my brief aviation journey, I had a plane
reserved and hoped for cloudy skies. Not the towering,
throw-down-fire-from-the-heavens kind of clouds, but a benign overcast that
I...

Reading the whiskey compass by
Ben Jackson
When you're flying partial panel, to what precision do you read the
mag compass? To the nearest 5 degrees? Estimate to the nearest
degree? How long do you go between readings and rely only on timed
turns?
For that matter, do you ever try to apply values from the correction
card? In IMC or even...

shortest runway w/ an ILS? by
Snowbird
recent thread has me wondering:
what's the shortest runway you've encountered with an ILS?
About the shortest I can think of offhand is the ILS 24 at
RID (Richmond, Indiana), 5500 ft.
We may have been somewhere w/ a shorter runway served by an
ILS, but probably didn't fly an ILS and I don't...

Galaxy XV / PRN 135 WAAS signal unofficially healthy again ? by
macpacheco
Since March 1st, PRN 135 WAAS ranging has changed from NM (Not
Monitored) to NPA (Non precision approach). From what I observed this
wouldn't be possible with MT0 (test mode) being broadcast by said GEO.
This is also typically the first step when a GEO is transitioned from
Test mode into regular...

final reserve fuel by
Tim
Hi,
Could anyone tell me how the final reserve for jets is calculated?
I know it's the fuel to fly for 30 minutes at 1500ft AAL in ISA
conditions at holding speed... But what weight do you use? Do you
assume that contignency fuel is burnt (so gross weight = TOW - TRIP
fuel - ALTN fuel) when...

Last night I flew from SJC to VNY. To my astonishment I was cleared

routing) at 9000 feet. I knew perfectly well that the routing was going
to change because I've done that route a zillion times, and indeed, near...
