I intend to buy a handheld. by almostthere
Just got my ticket and I plan to purchase a handheld Nav-Comm for back-up but it is said that they're useless at altitude without an external antenna connection. What connector do I use (BNC?) and how do I go about doing this on rented C172s? Any alternatives/suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Is the YouTube video legit. by Greg Hall
This guy is kitesailing and a 737 comes by and his kite snags on the empennage. Off he goes into the wild blue yonder. Is this video a hoax? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNQkIjxdSwg -- Gregory Hall

Slightly OT, How do birds fly IMC? by Ricky
I want to know how a bird maintains positional awareness and avoids vertigo while in the clouds. My next stop is to try & find out via Google & other online resources. If anyone here knows, though, it may make an interesting topic. Ricky

Glass vs. Charts by Mxsmanic
When you are flying (and assuming you have a GPS with electronic chart databases), do you usually use paper charts for navigation (looking up frequencies, checking for restricted airspace, etc.) or do you look it up on your GPS, and why? -- Transpose mxsmanic and gmail to reach me by e-mail.

First impressions of flight by Mxsmanic
What did you notice most during your very first experience travelling in any type of airplane, as passenger or pilot? And if you are a pilot, what did you notice most during your very first experience actually flying an airplane (if it was not also your very first experience with flight)? --...

Medical after cancer by Chas[_2_]
Just diagnosed with stage I breast cancer, mastectomy next week. Anticipate some degree of chemical warfare post operation. Doc says it may cause hot flashes, wife says welcome to her world. Current medical runs for another 14 months. I will be talking to the AOPA folks but was curious if...

MSFS X impressions by Robert M. Gary
I finally got around to installing the copy of MSFS X that's been sitting on my shelf for about 2 months. I must say I've very underwhelmed. First, I would recommend having it installed. I wasted almost an entire day installing it. The installation is very, very difficult. First, there are 2 DVDs....

Spin training by Steven Barnes
Woohoo! I just got back from my spin training for my CFI. I went up with a local acrobatic instructor in his Pitts. First time doing any severe unusual attitude stuff and 1st time in a tail dragger. First off, hats off to all those who fly taildraggers. That takes some foot work. Spins weren't...

It is costly fuel. Right? by neo
Like cars, mass production of personal plane is possible. Mass training of pilots who can work on pay equal to pay of car-driver is possible. But still i do not see planes in sky. Reason is costly fuel. Am i right?

Another pilot grounded by insurance by Roger Long
By this time tomorrow I will probably be posting my good-by to this group and the most interesting and rewarding adventure of my life. During an insurance review today we learned that our umbrella policy will only cover aircraft risks if I also have an aviation policy that covers each person up to...

PDA GPS software Which one?? by Kevin Black
Hi, Firstly I'm in Australia and VFR. I have a Garmin III Pilot, but am also about to purchase an iPaq PDA. Rather than upgrade to a colour GARMIN (296/396) at megabucks I thought I could get similar functionality using the PDA. Costings seem to be PDA nil (it's a sunk cost I'm going to buy it...

A new twist on complaints by Roger
Well, here we go again although so far there is just the one nut. A few years back there was an organized effort to close Midland Barstow (3BS). Of course the argument was noise even though we were here first. As the noise issue was not working they tried to fire up the residents by complaining...

Eclipse 500 by Neil Gould
Hi all, I was very impressed by the article on the Eclipse 500 in the latest AOPA magazine. After so much skepticism, criticism, and so forth, it appears that the promised aircraft is about to be delivered. I was particularly impressed by the description of the development process, and by...

Logging time in a P51D? by justaguy
Anybody care to take a shot at this question? I took a ride in a P51D recently. After we left the pattern the owner, in the front seat, let me (in the back seat) take over the stick for the next hour. Then in the pattern he took over and landed. I was the only one who touched the controls for an...
