If I had P7s skill I wouldn't need much on my panel either. But I do
like stuff that works. My panel is actually pretty simple, I'll send you a picture of it. Just because something is new doesn't mean it's better (New Coke, anyone?). I just happen to like finish gates, and think they are more fun and easier (and in some ways safer) than the new finish cylinders. AAT's are Ok when used appropriately (i.e. when weather is a real challenge) but I still prefer to RACE, which I define as everybody going to the same turnpoints. Otherwise, it's just another XC day. It's all fun, though. Kirk |

I have a Compaq 3000 laptop. I bought a IO Gear guc232a usb to serial
converter to upload my volkslogger. It didn't work. I then bought a usb to serial converter from Purple Computing (the guys who have garmin plugs for sale). If you don't use the highest speed (115k) it works reliably for up and down loads of a volkslogger. I've never tried to load an SN-10 but I think it would work. I'll try to find an SN-10 to prove this. Dan High Flights Soaring Colorado Springs |

It is a "U232-P9", 4 inches long. I believe they are manufactured
specifically for them. They also sell a 6 foot cable model, but for the laptop, that's a bit much. link to them is:http://pfranc.com/usb/usb.mhtml#drivers ; their new driver is "signed" by Microsoft - I continue to use the older one that wasn't, since it works. I've also bought their do-it-yourself Garmin plugs twice, and have been satisified with the products. The IO Gear usb to serial, bought at best buy in Colorado, is only useful as paperweight (if the wind is low enough...) Dan |

Hi Dave,
You might find the thread on USB to serial adapters and EWs in uk.rec.aviation.soaring interesting. My most recent post there is at: http://uras.gliderpilot.net/?db=uras&op=s2&id=22469&kw= Ed. |

wrote in message roups.com... OK, this may sound silly, but can you report either good or bad experiences with a SPECIFIC MAKE AND MODEL of USB-to-serial converter ? We have many reports of units that don't work properly, and a few that do (but not necessarily for everyone). A few specific questions: - what is the make and model of the converter ? - did the driver install without dire warnings from Windoze about 'uncertified driver' and the like ? - you are using it with Windoze XP, which SP (service pack) ? - does your laptop sometimes crash after you 'resume' ? - has the helpful MS site explained (after a crash) that you need to update the driver, and directed you to a site with only non-arabic characters (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, or somesuch) ? - have you got scary messages like 'thread stuck in kernel' ? - does it work reliably with SN10 PC-Link (log, database) ? - does it work reliably with SN10 'software load' ? This should help us collate some recommendations... Thanks in advance ! Best Regards, Dave 'YO' I've just bought one from Easysync: http://www.easysync.co.uk/usbrs232_single.html Works fine using xp sp2 with Garmin 2 and an EW logger. Rob. did you try it with ewview or ewuploader or both? Jim |
