Some of you remember Walter Cawby, he was an active contest flier for years and a retired airline captain. Walter gave up flying gliders a few years back and still flew his beloved Baron.
Walter was always interested in sailplanes, competed all over the country and his wife Kay was a;ways a big part of his glider activities. Kay also is an accomplished glider pilot, having flown many high performance sailplanes. Walter recently became sick and after a brief illness headed west. |

Walter was a wonderful man, very accomplished pilot, and a good friend. Green air and tailwinds on your journey, Walt! Steve Leonard |

I'm honored to be the current custodian of his last glider. I enjoyed the time I spent with Walter. UH |

Sorry to hear. Lots of memories flying with Walt from the 70s: the early Cordele regionals and Std. Class nationals of that era. Condolences.
FWIW, my brother, Mark, still owns what I recall is Walt's ASW 19 and--after having his enthusiasm for soaring rekindled while crewing for me at Nephi this summer--is currently getting it airworthy again after a long period of inactivity. Chip Bearden |

Great to hear that, Chip. Does this long period of inactivity also include lapsed registration?
I think Don Wassness has Walt's old AS-W24. And, I an thinking there was also an LS-4 in there between the 19 and the 24? I think it went through Don, as well. Not sure where it is now. Steve Leonard |

I flew with Walt at Cordele, Bermuda High, Perry and Seminole, wonderful guy, Great sense of humor, really knew how to fly. I enjoyed every minute that I was in the air with him, or in his company on the ground. My condolences to his family for their loss.
