Default Short vs Soft Field techniques

Rather than post the same thing twice to two different groups, you may
want to consider just putting both groups in the single post.

I'm kind of distressed that many CFI's are so short sighted (or is it
lack of experience?) that they assume a short field takeoff has an
obstacle to contend with. Or, they have never actually operated from a
soft field so can only parrot the book for techniques.
Have you been challenged to match the book numbers for take off or
landing? Can you do a precision spot landing? If not, WHY not? If faced
with a short field, how much room do you have to fudge the touchdown
spot?
Combine a short field with a soft surface, add an obstacle and a
crosswind and how will you do? Just as, and perhaps more importantly,
how will your CFI do? After all, that is where you are learning this
important facet of your aviation career.
I'd like to see some discussion on the subjects. Make you think and
stir some controversy.
Bring it on....!!! ggg
