Another question about Canadian procedures

The Canadian Flight Supplement says that flight plans or flight
itineraries are required for flights over 25nm from the aerodrome. So
what happens if I want to take a sight seeing flight, and I don't know how
far I'm going to go or what direction? Can't you just let the fancy take
you?

The rules at my FBO and also the Calgary Flying Club are that you must post
an itinerary or file a flight plan for a planned trip greater than 25 NM
from CYBW.

Hi Paul

You can file a flight itinerary with a resonsible person.
That can be as vague as - we're going to depart xyz at 1400, fly North
on a route to ABC. May divert 50 miles either side of track.
Anticipated return to ABC by 1700.
In fact you can even file that as a flight plan.

The whole point of it is that this is very hostile country - we spend
thousands of hours searching for one missing plane - and we would
appreciate some clues as to where to look. It is not a big brother thing
- it's a search and rescue thing.

If you do a flight itinerary, the important thing is to make sure that
the person really understands what to do, i.e. if I don't call you by X
time, call this phone number and give them this information. There was
an incident a while back when a pilot left a flight itinerary with an
acquaintance and then crashed, but the acquaintance didn't notify
anyone for days. In the event, the pilot died right away, but if he
had been survived the crash critically injured, it's unlikely he would
have got help in time.

As others have mentioned, a VFR flight plan can be just as vague --
i.e. "I'm sightseeing between Ottawa and Pembroke for 90 minutes and
then returning to the Ottawa airport". At least FSS knows what to do
if you don't close the plan.
