Does a safety pilot have to have a current medical and be current as far
as landings go, or just be rated in the category/class being flown? |

IIRC...
To serve as a required crew member you have to have a medical. To serve as PIC you have to be current. Dave Matt Young wrote: Does a safety pilot have to have a current medical and be current as far as landings go, or just be rated in the category/class being flown? |

The safety pilot just has to be rated in the category/class being flown. However, he may not act as PIC if he is not current or does not have a medical, so the other pilot must be able to act as PIC. |

That is true. However, he also cannot act as safety pilot without a current medical. Ron (EPM) (N5843Q, Mooney M20E) (CP, ASEL, ASES, IA) |

Acting as safety pilot is one of the privileges of a pilot certificate. Exercising such a privilege requires a current medical certificate, according to FAR 61.23a. --Gary |
