I have been informed that my HSI is precessing fairly rapidly. I'll
check it out in the air soon (plane is in annual). It's a Century NSD-360A non-slaved unit. A refurbished unit will cost about $2700. Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement? The Sandel SN3500 looks nice, but expensive. The airplane is a 1974 Cessna Cardinal RG. I'm about to start IFR flight training so this is fairly important.. randall g =%^) PPASEL+Night 1974 Cardinal RG http://www.telemark.net/randallg Lots of aerial photographs of British Columbia at: http://www.telemark.net/randallg/photos.htm Vancouver's famous Kat Kam: http://www.katkam.ca |

When my HSI needed an overhaul last year I put in a Sandel 3500 instead. It is expensive, but it gives you so much information that once you get used to it you won't want to fly an airplane without one. -- Ken Reed M20M, N9124X |

Sounds like you are in heat for an upgrade wihich will make $2700 seem
cheap!! If you want to repair the unit, I"d suggest Porter Strait in Tulsa. They will repair the thing without doing an overhaul. They are very reasonable on repairs and in my experience do the highest quaity work. Bill Hale Loveland CO Not connected other than as a satisfied customer. It is expensive, but it gives you so much information that once you get used to it you won't want to fly an airplane without one. Ken, what other equipment have you hooked up to it? XM weather, traffic information, gps, adf, dme... ? I already had a Garmin 396 so I had weather and to add it to the 3500 didn't make financial sense. I don't have traffic. I know the Sandel is hooked into the Garmin 430, the #1 NAV (with VOR, ILS & glideslope) and ADF & DME. Of course it also has heading bug, etc. I don't remember if there's anything else hooked up to it. While I was having work done, I had my avionics guy reposition my TKS controls to the bottom of the avionics stack and had him slave the Garmin 396 to the Garmin 430; also I had the 396 hard wired for power and ran the 396 audio through the audio panel. -- Ken Reed M20M, N9124X |

I have one available but it is 24 volt, just pulled from a P-210. With the Signal Generator(SG465), rate gyro(C14A), and control box(CP468), you would only be into it about 4.5 AMU's. That is probably half of a Sandel, and here is what the P210 pilot said after his change to a Sandel: The reason I purchased the Sandel is because the Knig EHSI just wasn't compatible with the rest of the avionics package. I liked the EHSI so much and the Sandel is close to it in terms of performance. I say close, but the EHSI has more features and I like it better. Installation probably cost about $1,000. My Sandel is the 3 1/2 inch unit. They also have a 4 or 4 1/2" unit for $11,000. The 3 1/2 inch unit is fine for me and I haven't had any problems using it. You are correct that the components listed would provide a complete installation. The Sandel is far superior to the steam HSI. If overlays GPS, DME, ADF, VOR 1 and 2 on the HSI with a push button. The EHIS goes several steps beyond and provides winds aloft direction and speed and a few more incidentals. If I could have kept the King EHSI with the new avionics, I would have. In fact, I intended to, but it wasn't compatible with the other equipment that I chose. Al G |
